Pre-reading has BIG advantages in Egypt

by atufft

The enormous information found while wandering the ruins of Egypt can be confusing, and for those without sufficient background knowledge, quite exhausting. Depending upon your preferences, I recommend these books on the language, literature, history, and architecture of the ancient ruins found at Giza, Luxor, Aswan, and elsewhere. Many of these books are available on-line, but they can also be purchased at a good bookstore in Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan.

Insect repelent

by Becky06

I was advised to take insect repellent with me to egypt but just found it a waste of money!! I wore it for the first day but saw no bugs so didn't bother for the rest of my two week stay and neither me or my boyfriend had any bites or even saw any bugs! So on my second trip to Egypt I didn't bother taking any and again no problem!

It would be best if you pack a bottle of either Pepto Bismol or Immodium with you. You can probably find them in most pharmacies in Egypt but its better to be safe than sorry. If you dont take any, there is also some med called ANTINAL(nilfuroxazide) that you can easily find in most pharmacies in Egypt. -------------Posted by Khadi

Pack your walking shoes

by susie46

Take your normal holiday gear, shorts / t,shirts / sun hat / shades, walking shoes or trainers etc. Its not really a place for your high heels. Insect repellant, mosquito spray. You can easily purchase any toiletry item but they did appear expensive.

Wintertime clothing in Egypt

by markyg

Having gone to Egypt over the Christmas holiday, I was suprised to find cool temperatures along the Nile, even in Aswan. The high's were between 60F-65F and the lows around 45F. They said this type of weather could be possible between the months of December and February. At night I had to wear a sweater and a jacket just to stay warm, especially since it is windy along the Nile. If traveling to Alexandria, expect rain, otherwise, Egypt seems generally sunny. It is best to wear layered clothing as the tombs were hot, but the temples were cooler with the shade.Wear comfortable walking shoes/sneakers and expect to get them constantly dusty. Footing is often difficult in the temples and tombs. My wife wore flats with a slight heel and had difficulty walking.

Mt. Sinai – Packing list

by Diana75

Use a backpack to carry everything on the mountain. Carrying something in your hands it will slow down your climbing. Even if you climb Mt. Sinai in the summer months there are some mandatory things to take along: socks, hat, good walking shoes, scarf, sweater or jacket. On the top of the mountain is really cold. The ones that are not willing to carry anything with them, they can rent blankets for 10 LE (USD 2-). Don’t forget also a pocket lamp. It will be more than useful for the final part of the climbing.

What will you need in Egypt?

by sammie

Best thing is, if you're going across the country, and traveling a lot, don't take any suitcases, the best thing is to take bags with you and pack with the idea; "what do I need?". If you stay in one place, you can take more with you of course. Then you come home and you think: I didn't need that and why did I take it with me? At night, it can get cold very suddenly (in the winter). During the day, it’s a nice and good temperature. In the summer, the temperatures rise up, more then we are used to. Dressing naked won’t help either plus it’s not allowed in a Muslim country. So don’t go in the summer! That’s the best advice I can give you here. Basic gear is necessary; if it's not for you, it can be for your children or spouse. Think about painkillers, bandages and so on. Make sure you have enough film and batteries. They do sell batteries and film, but it's far more expensive then when...

Sunscreen is a must

by gypsysoul73

something light and with wheels, especially if like us, you'll be moving around from the airport to the hotel to the train to the boat and vice versa. Egypt is a Muslim country, so they dress conservatively. It is only polite and proper to do the same when visiting. Dress modestly and don't show too much skin. Capri pants are ok, loose light linen pants and skirts are best for the heat. Make sure to bring a shawl, as these come in handy when entering sacred places. They may require you to cover your heads. Lots and lots of sunscreen!

Brrr! Believe it or not.......Egypt can get cold!

by TheWanderingCamel

December and January in Egypt can actually get quite cold. I highly recommend bring a warm coat if travelling in these months. Egyptian styles are not really winter ski type coats...more overcoats. I wish I had brought my long wool coat! Heed this advice. You will thank me! PS: Upper Egypt and the Red Sea Coast are not quite as cold in these months. If you plan to hike Mt. Sinai before sunrise, you will need a heavy coat even in the fall and spring months. Many of the lower priced hotels are not equipped with heat. You should be fine with a blanket but going out at night can be quite chilly! Here is a link with a chart of average temperatures for Egypt. Good still camera with image stabilization

by atufft

Whatever you want, but I prefer luggage with wheels and a handle over the now popular backpack. When you buy the alabaster jar in Luxor, the backpack won't provide enough protection. Save room in your bags for souvenirs. Shorts aren't popular among Arab fundamentalists, so I recommend long pants and short sleeved shirts. Women don't have to cover their hair, but it helps to have a hat and sunglasses. Nothing special here. I don't recall mosquitoes being a problem. Bringing toilet paper for the public bathrooms is probably a good idea. Bring a digital still camera with image stabilization and good lense. The Egyptian Museum in Cairo allows cameras for a charge that's higher than the admissions price, which is worth it, but flash photography isn't allowed. Same elsewhere and in some cases no photograph is allowed except when no guards are around. Image stabilization and a fast lense...
