Beware of the sun!!

by vdoortje

Take enough bags with you! You will buy a lot af things that need some space. Fill them with light clothing, toileteries you can't get without and of which you are not sure you can get them in Egypt, camera's and/or filming equipment and enough batteries. These things are not very much cheaper in Egypt. Cotton and/or linen clothing. Wide, never tight. Long sleeved/legged is more comfortable as long as it is wide. From the months October till May some sweaters or vests will serve you at night.Have some fancy clothing and shoes for diners. Egyptians like to dress up for dinner and will appreciate it when you do as well. Have something to cover your head in protection of the burning sun Sun protection lotion of a high factor. DON"T take Imodium or stuff like that! By experience I know it doesn't work in Egypt! Go to the local pharmacy in your place of stay. There will be lot's of...

If Going To Sinai Peninsula...

by coceng

Well, if you are going to do some divings along the beaches in Sinai Peninsula, then you have to bring the appropriate stuffs ! Diving suits & speedos ! Bikinis too... Easy to get in Dahab or Nuweiba or Sharm El-Sheikh... Yes, the underwater camera... If you want to sleep by the beach or in the open at night, bring a tent !

Bring These !

by coceng

Keep everything small so that you can drag around to catch the buses or maybe running away from the hasslers ! Walking shoes is allright...as you would do lots of walking. Good to explore places by walking. A camera is a must ! A tripod is good to catch some scenic moments during sunset all over Egypt... Yes, bring lots of bottled water. You need them. Some places would sell you high money for a small water bottle especially climbing up Mt. Sinai !

winter ... winter ... winter at the desert

by ukirsari

"keepin' dry" dailypack [parachute] to avoid your stuffs from thunderstorm at pyramids areas. we had the experience and it's so amazing [but still look after our stuffs will always dry]. comfy trainers or sneakers, high ankle will be better and several additional socks and balaclava, wool jacket and parachute jacket. tissue paper is necessary! bring several additional battery since ALL of the sceneries and ruins and temples and historical sites are breathtaking and you'll never realize ... your battery is exhausted :) * be prepare about arid condition during winter. which is: dailylight can be happened very high temperature and nearly zero at the night. so, the preparation should be double, in term: light clothest for dailylight and winter gears for night :)* torch for underground activities, like walking and exploring pyramids and visiting pharaohs' cemeteries

Laptops: Power adapters and converters

by TheWanderingCamel

Most laptops come with an internal converter so one doesn't need to buy one...theoretically. I, however, managed to harm my laptop the 1st week I was living in Egypt. I had to get it repaired and ended up buying a power converter from Radio Shack (can be found all over Egypt). I think it cost around 40 US$ at the time. Here is a link similar to the large power converter I bought (weighed a ton, not suitable for lugging all over Egypt as a tourist).http://www.international-electrical-supplies.com/converters.htmlIf you are going to be living there then I suggest budgeting the converter into your plans. It will help protect from power surges. If you plan to bring a surge protector with multiple plugs that has a power switch on it, I believe you will still need the converter to plug the surge protector into (unless the surge protector is designed for 220). I managed to blow mine out somehow...

Sunglasses

by TheWanderingCamel

Sunglasses are an item I prefer to bring from home but there are some great sunglasses shops that the latest designer names can be found in at about the same prices as one would find in the USA. If you are going to be out in the desert, you might want to bring a pair or plan to buy a pair with a high UV rating. The glare from the sand can be rather harsh, same with the water if you are going diving.-----Posted by Megypt

Drink plenty of water

by Nobbe

The temperature in Egypt is very high so you should drink alot of water. We went inside one of the Pyramids, and if you think it should be colder inside the pyramids you're all wrong. The temperature was actually higher inside (almost like a stone owen...).When you went out again into the open air, it felt cold (standing right outside in the sunshine), and the temperature was around +45 deg C, in the shadows... Here my friend Peter is suffering from the heat.

egyptian history book

by miromi

the usual obvious suggestions for travelling in the middle east: long sleeved light shirts for women, warm clothing for the evenings on the beach and in the desert. this one's a little obvious but we regret not bringing a more comprehensive egyptian history book. there's just so much to see and so much to look at, it would have been nice if we had studied a lot more to understand what we were seeing.

Pens and Gum

by Yogues

All of the children in the towns we visited asked for one thing - pens. They needed them to do their school work. Of course, I had forgotten that when I went to Kenya, all of the kids there wanted gum and pens. Bring some packs of Bic pens - easy to pack and will make lots of kids happy.
