On the streets: It's all about the street meat!
by FireMike
There is something special about walking down a litter filled street complete with various odours, roaming feral cats, rats and turkeys, only to find a local street vendor making food with his bare hands. But it is all worth it.
There were two main dishes that we commonly enjoyed. The first which is 100% street food was falafels. They would whip these up in front of you frying the ground chick peas in a basin of boiliing oil then filling a pita with the falafel balls, lettuce, tomato, sauce and spice. All for one Egyptian Pound or about 25 cents US.The second and my abslolue favourite was koshari. Which you usually have to actually go into a resataurant, but they only serve the one item. It is a combination of ring shapped noodles, rice, dried onions, a red sauce and hot spices. Absolutely fantastic! You pay by the size of a bowl ranging from 1-4 Egyptian Pounds or .25 to 1 USD.
