Arabesque: Friendly, Sumptuous Egyptian Cuisine

by cuteynfatal

This restaurant has delicious, authentic Egyptian cuisine. The head waiter (maitre d'), Tarek Zaki, is extremely helpful, carefully explaining how each dish is made. His description for every dish was perfect and our entire group (10 people) enjoyed every dish. Tarek also has a wonderful sense of humor and regaled us with stories of his home & family. Molokiah (spelling?) is an Egyptian dish made of a spinach-like vegetable which is chopped and then cooked in a broth. The molokiah is then served in a soup-like fashion. With it comes rice and a juicy broiled chicken. The guest is then instructed to add the rice and chicken into the molokiah and top with sour cream and other condiments. Absolutely fantastic!

-: dessert

by TomorrowsAngel

Egyptian desserts of pastry or puddings are usually drenched in honey syrup. Baklava (filo pastry, honey and nuts). Umm ali is raisin cake soaked in milk and served hot. Egyptian rice pudding is called mahallabiyya and is served topped with pistachios. Or there's always fresh fruit: mohz (bananas), balah (dates), burtu'aan (oranges) and battiikh (melon).

Falafels !!!

by wandering360

"True" Middle-Eastern Falafels are about 2 inches in diameter (of chick peas) and are served hot, fresh from fryer -- with no pita bread, garnish, etc. They're great!!! ... and they can be found very cheaply everywhere. (And I never worried about buying them from off the beaten path because the hot oil should have killed off any potential bugs.)

Fishawi's Cafe: Fresh drinks, good vibe, great service

by bpwillet

This is one of my favorite places in Cairo. The coffeehouse has not closed in over 200 years and stays open 24 hours a day. It is close to the center of the Khan al-Khalili and is a good stop off point. It is a great place for people watching, sipping tea and smelling the whiffs of smoke coming from various flavored sheesha tobacco around you. Try any number of their fresh fruit juices. When in season, the pomagranate (or Roman in Arabic) juice is great.

Al Badawia Restaurant and Cafe: All fresh menu

by bpwillet

This is not only a great place to stop and "fuel up" after seeing the pyramids but the food is outstanding. The menu is reasonable and all the ingredients are fresh. There is also sheesha's available if you want to partake in that. If you just stop by for a quick tea or coffee, the view is unbeatable. Ask the owner/manager Assam if you would like to arrange seeing the sunrise at his place and he will arrange it for you.

Nile hilton roof restaurant: Highhhhhhh

by elef_pap

We eat there at our first night at Cairo. We was tired from the fly,the transportation, the chaos of the streets but we decide to go out for a dinner just to feel better. We go at nile hilton late around 23.00.When you get in the restaurant everythink else is history. It's not about the views or the service or the food, everythink was suberb but what really feel is that you 'upgrade' the quality of your life.If you go there you understand what i'm talking about. Tip.Go late and take a window table even if you've got to wait a little.

Eat out and about

by Sheppy

Egypt provides a pleasant collection of restaurants. Assuming your stomach is fairly flexible I'd advise eating at some of the local spots. How do you know a good spot from a bad one? Lot's of locals eating and drinking and producing lot's of noise! There's a suprising choice for vegetarians too, remember the source of falafel??

Abdu's Restaurant

by travelinxs

Ah, NOW we're talking. Abdul (pictured with his father who wore an eternal grin and never left the restaurant) knew how to cook up a good bit of nosh. This was in Siwa, and the only place to eat at the time.

Tip Photo
The Last Supper

by travelinxs

On our last day there we ordered everything on the menu for a giant feast, which came to be known as 'The Last Supper' . It set us back a whopping £1.75 (US$2.25) but that did include drinks. And what a feast. But the main difference, as so often the case, was the hospitality. It was FUN to eat there, not a neccessity. I learned more about Siwa here than anywhere else (bearing in mind that Siwa had not made its debut in the Lonely planet at this time).

Tip Photo
Floating Restaurant

by travelinxs

For something a bit special, try a floating restaurant such as this. It made a pleasant change from the usual rice and mush I normaly eat, but cost respectively. I also had a meal at the Hilton in Cairo. I was turned away at first for not having a tie! So I borrowed one off my host at the guesthouse I was staying at. Well, it was an experience I suppose. But could I get a smile out of that cardboard waiter? And it was oh so ssssshhhh! quiet! Give me the rice and mush down at the railway station anytime!!
