Bashayer by marimar_72 Most tourist places offer small souvieners for you to take back home....just be smart and bargain.... Do not discuss anything with your friends infornt of the salesman...most of them understand many languages. Some antique and souviener shops have fixed prices....but usually they are in resedental areas, where only Egyptian would know about them.
The picture here is for a shop in Cairo, called Bashayer,it also has a branch in Sharm El shiekh.
mostly it`s fixed priced, but maybe if you buy many items, they can make you a 10% Discount. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherAddress: 58 Mossadak Street,Dokki,CairoPhone: +202-3361006Directions: Take Mohyi El Deen Abu El Ezz street and turn on Mossadak street.

Papyrus demonstration by Myndo Papyrus-making, another one of the world known Egyptian crafts. Have a look at a short demonstration on the Papyrus plant and how they make their paper out of it. Actually that is quite easy: you cut the Papyrus plant into thin stripes, let them in the wtare for some time, take them out, place them diagonally over each other, then press them and let them under the press for some more time -presto! And then you paint colorful pictures on it (preferably scenes from gods and such which you found in some tombs) and sell them to the tourists. Be careful if you buy them. There are some around that are made from cheap banana leafes. The scam should be able to be seen, when you hold it against the light. Papyrus has a classical structure.

Perfume glass bottles by Myndo If you are allergic to perfume or do not like strong smells, you may better stay outside any Perfume factory. First thing you get here is a small overview over the ground substances they have (with demonstration) and some of the fix combinations (with demonstration), and then you may say which ones you would like to buy ... any questions? Some of the fixed mixtures they have they say are the ground for some well known perfumes as Armani for men (Tut ench amun is the mixture).
Perfumes mixtures and ground substances etc. and do not forget these fine glass bottles...

by TheWanderingCamel There are Kodak stores all over Cairo. I had no difficulty in getting film developed quickly. Of course I was not a professional level so this advice is definite for a basic camera. Check out the link to the Kodak webpage list of all of the shops in Egypt with their phone number. Found it very useful information when I was living in Egypt. ------- Posted by Megypt

by TheWanderingCamel The site is a little known area in Cairo where foreigners and Egyptians find used, rare, hard-to-get or specialized printed material. For example, a tremendous amount of books can be found on the subject of Egyptian antiquities, all at their usual below market discounted prices. As well, many of the shops feature top magazines (fashion, travel, music, business, etc) from all over the world including Japan, Germany, France and America. If you are on the hunt for a certain textbook or cheap computer manual, the Soor El-Azbackaya area will probably fill your needs. The site is also a gold mine for rare and hard-to-get books in many languages, including old Arabic newspapers covering prominent Egyptian events from decades past. NOTE: the prices might have changed since last year ------------------ Posted by Khadi Leave a Comment Theme: BooksAddress: Soor El-Azbackaya near downtown CairoDirections: The zone is around Attaba near downtown Cairo.

Khan Al Khalili Baazar by ATXtraveler While attending our first bazaar of the trip, we were approached by many different street vendors, shouting catchy phrases like "How can I take your money this evening?" One vendor in particular though I must warn you about. His name is Mohammed, and he is 4-6 years old. He rivals the best used car salesmen in all of America if you ask me. This child is a wunderkind of sales, and as a professional salesman, I know a good one when I see it! Watch out, because he will negotiate you into a price, and then work his way back up to the price he wants by saying things like: "One for 2 US, or 2 for 5!! Good deal, good deal".

Alabaster demonstration by Myndo Alabaster carving into vases and other figurines is a local craft in Egypt. In most of the factories where these stone items come from, they will give you a short introduction into how they are done. It is interesting, because hey also show you how some fake the granit-figures by making them heavier (those are not cared stone, but cement like things with old iron parts in it).
Everything carved by hand out of this stone. vases, plates, figurines etc.

So pretty by TheWanderingCamel Whilst the perfumes of Araby may not be to your taste, the delicate, hand-blown glass perfume bottles you see everywhere in shops and bazaars are another matter. Looking for all the world like something a genii would live in -andreminscent of the wonderful spires of the minarets that spear the skies everywhere, they come in a bewildering variety of shapes, sizes and colours and vary in price from next to nothing for a pretty but fairly ordinary bottle to a small fortune for something that really is a little treasure of glowing glass and real gold. The hard part comes in choosing - just make sure you pack it carefully. leyle Leave a Comment Theme: Gifts

Craftsman shapes Alabastar pot by Vintom You will be invited to watch the process of Alabaster being shaped into urns and such like. I suppose the demonstration was quite informative and entertaining in it's own way, with the man who was doing all the talking explaining quite clearly how you could tell real alabaster from the more common marble, sold by unscrupulous traders as genuine alabaster. Apparently real alabaster is translucent, a lot lighter and considerably more fragile then marble. This was quite a revelation to me, as I didn't really know, or very much care for that matter about this form of stone carving. There was no way I was going to buy any of these alabaster vases, or even one of the many intricate ornaments that were lining the shelves of the shop because they were so expensive, and not only that, I could not really carry them safely in a rucksack.
