Egypt: Souvenir Hunter: An Odd Guide for you! (Part 1)

by matt10gonzalez

Love souvenirs? Then you'll definitely love Egypt! There's no shortage of souvenirs here! DAD- "Souvenirs here even outnumber the food supplies!" Only problem is-It CAN be a challenge to buy souvernirs if you're on a budget! Here's an odd but useful guide: WHAT MAKES IT CHALLENGING:1.) Many salespeople (Virtually all were men) here are so smart! I've never seen a country (As of 2005) yet where in they invite you over to their shop, treat you like a friend (give you tea, which sometimes they ask for a payment) and charm you with flying colors! (Both to male and female!) They definitely know the best weakness of the human being- the human heart! 2.) And after they charm you with flying colors, THEY suddenly harrass you to BUY! And they suddenly become a broken record! 3.) And they'll rip you off! (They'll start really high! Here starts the bargaining game!) 3.) They MIGHT drive you crazy!...

No hassle or haggle???

by stamporama

I have not seen window signs like this in Cairo, only in Luxor. Whether it actually means that you won't be harassed into buying or the shop does not allow bargaining, I guess it's best to assume both. It can be found in souvenir stores, jewelry shops, souks, etc.

American University Bookstore: American University, Book lovers will crave for it

by michaelxxx

Along my way in Egypt I ran out of English books to read. Cairo seemed to have little bookstores and not much titles. Suddenly we ventured to the American University and my prayers were answered. Inside the American University there were tons of books! From novels to Lonely planets to kid titles until you go crazy looking at all the titles! The prices are kind of above average, but hey! I found the title I was looking for! But do remember, if you have a student Id card, be sure to bring it when you shop here, they give you discounts, and believe me it really makes quite a difference! You may buy any type of book, from horror novels, such as Stephen King, John Saul and more. Travel Books such as Lonely Planet, DK, and much more types of books that you will go bananas looking at all of them! Depends on how much you buy. The books are more expensive compared to the average price, my...

Do NOT pay the first price they tell you...:-)

by Joenes

There are a lot of shops that basically have the same stuff and they will hassle you as soon as even look at a shop...:-)Negotiate till the end of times and you will still have paid too much but that is a charm in itself. You are always getting a dicount or a special price for a special friend.Walking away helps to get them sell it to you at the price you want it. As everything in Egypt it is as expensive as you want to make it...:-)If you can't or won't try to get the price down it will be expensive!

Ali Baba shops: How to bring back your sheesha

by fullcirclea

Alibaba has a few shops tucked in a alleyway. When bringing back you sheesa pipe it will be packed in a bag that you can carry on. be careful to remove the pipecleaner and the charcoal because the airlines will take it away. Pack those in your checked luggage

Nerfertiti

by M.E.R.V

Well I just thought everyone should get this hand-craved Nerfertiti if they get the chance to! They are sold at touristy areas and in my opinion best bought from those pesky locals with much bargaining skills of course. I got mine for 4CYP(Cypriot Pounds) down from 12! Still a ripped off though but I really wanted it! They are a bit heavy if you are cautious about carrying more weight around.

Ghalebiyas/Jalabiyas - tradtional clothes

by mbatsheba

Arabic/Egyptian Clothes....which are real cool even to wear back home. I bought a few as it makes for a nice hostess gown/long dress when having a cocktail/dinner party at home or visiting friends.Lots of other stuff available too - glass perfume bottles, hubble-bubble sets, lots and lots of souvenirs to take back home for yourself or give away as presents. Always bargain.....start with One third the quoted price and you eventually get it for half the price.

Cairo Museum: Stick to the museum

by ollyf

The souvenir shops in the Cairo Museum are your best bet for souvenirs. Sure, they are more expensive than the markets, but at least you know you're buying genuine articles. For example, a market or street seller will flog you "papyrus" which is really banana leaf, or "gold" which is just tin with gold paint, and so on.The Museum naturally also has a great range of Egyptology books, DVDs and resources.

Markets: Run the gauntlet

by ollyf

We were taken to a big market, the name of which I forgot, although there must be several. It was a real cultural experience, although not the most comfortable of my life. It was like running the gauntlet, with touts haranguing us from both sides to try to get us into their stores. If ignored, they ran through a raft of European languages to try to get a response, which was very impressive despite being annoying! There's not a moment's rest to be had and I didn't want to reward anybody who was hassling me by giving them my money, but at the same time I did want to buy some souvenirs. So, as a matter of principle, when I saw a stall at which the vendor was sleeping, I chose something from his selection and then woke him up to buy it!A further warning: One of the older ladies from my tour group was knocked over as she had her bag stolen by a young boy who snatched it from her at a sprint....
