Institute of Payrus: Papyrus

by Beograd

As I have told you, you can find papyrus on every corner, but here is where you get the quality. There are all different sizes and themes painted on them. From ancient Egyptian history to modern themes. You can even have your name incrypted in kartusha on a papyrus here. The prices are from 40 LE and up. It is way more expencive than on the street, but it is the quality that you really pay for. In this perticular shop, we tried to bargain, but without success.

...: Alabaster

by Beograd

Alabaster is something that Egypt is famous for and it is the cheapest in Luxor. Plus there is a great offer of different objects. There are two sorts of alabaster figures: handcrafted and industrial production. Of course, there is a huge difference in price.

Khan El-Khalili: Souvenires

by Beograd

This is a bazaar in Cairo. There isn't a thing you can't find in here: cotton, a souvenir, gold, silver, make up (I recommand "kohel", a black powder women use for eyes, but not as an eye shadow, but as an eye-liner a "kajal"), papyrus, clothes... As people in my country would say "From a needle to a locomotion". You must be very careful, because not everything that shines is gold or silver! In Gyza, people will offer you all sorts of souvenires like pyramids, sphinx etc. but I recomand you to buy it in Khan El-Khalili. It is more interesting, and it can be much cheaper. BARGAIN!!!!

Bedouine Village: Shopping in the desert?

by Beograd

There, in the bedouine village, was a litlle “shop” selling all different sorts of things. There you could find interesting rocks, herbs and things that we’ve been told are made by the village inhabitants out off what the nature has to give them. So there, we found a “necklace” with a heart shaped pendant of pure “natural plastic” all with "MAde in China" lable… In this particular shop, I went for a meteor rock or something like that.

??????: Cotton? Spices? You name it, they have it

by Beograd

Souvenirs can be found on every step in Egypt. Hurghada is no different. There are several shops with famous egyptian cotton, papyrus, alabaster, silver, spices etc. But once you step out of Hurghada’s touristic centre and enter those places where tourists rarely (or never) visit, you get to see what is it that this country has to offer. It is not recommandable to go there on your own in the evening, especially if it’s “all women group” . You can find other things very cheap in Hurghada, and some things should be left for Cairo. But my experiance tells that when you find something you like, buy it immediatelly, because you might not find it anywhere else. Price is something you take relativly! There is a must do in Egypt, and it is connected to shopping, and that is BARGAIN. In 99,9% shops you must bargain. You might come to a 10th part of the initial price, and don't worry! You are...

Streets and Markets: Shopping in Egypt

by GlobeTrottin

The markets, streets of Egypt are filled with vendors. The items we most indulged ourselves with were attar (perfumed oils), papyrus paintings (as gifts- and to make it fancier- frame it when you get home), and some miscellaneous things at the pyramids.Make SURE you bargain! And don't allow yourself to get 'sucked' in and 'suckered' by aggresive vendors. No- it is not their sisters/nieces/daughters' wedding next week. Don't allow yourself to give in to outrageous prices because they sat you down and gave you drinks or tea.

Somwhere in Khan el-Khalili: Perfume bottles

by miman

Glass perfume bottles are exclusively hand blown, becoming beautiful works of pure art. In all shops, you must haggle while in others the price will be set. Today, these bottles are most numerous in the famous Khan el-Khalili market, where one may find every shape, size, color and ornamentation of such bottles. Of course, they are also available in almost every location one might find tourists in Egypt. These beautiful bottles come in a variety shapes, colors, and sizes, from the very small to extra large.. Always check the plunger within the stopper. These may not be very long, but they should not be broken off with sharp edges, a common problem found on even very fine perfume bottles after having been shipped. Also, be sure to carefully inspect the top of tear shaped stoppers, as the very upper edge can sometimes be damaged. Glass perfume bottles and parfumes. 5 - 20 euro.

Shop Flop

by seabreezer

I'm normally a shopaholic, but I didn't find much to tempt me in Egypt. We didn't do much more than visit the gold/perfume/papyrus/alabaster shops with our tour group and trawl the bazaars, but I don't think we missed out on much. Many of the clothes/shoes were poorly made/dirty, but we did buy some beautiful bead/malachite necklaces for a fraction of what they'd cost here. As a symbol of our strong relationship (because papyrus is a symbol of strength), Andy and I had our names painted in hyrogliphics onto a genuine papyrus cartouche. It will look nice on the wall of our new house, and was only £13. The perfumery makes replica eau de parfum of well-known brands, but for the price you could almost buy the real thing. I found some beautiful perfume bottles made from coloured glass, but was very annoyed when Andy bought them at the airport duty-free shop for less than half of what I'd...

Khan El Khalili: El bazar Kalili

by Botitas

Khan El Kalili is the biggest bazaar in Egypt and, probably, in all the african continent. There you can find local craft mostly. If you don´t like bargain and you have a problem with the english you can ask for Jordi, there everybody knows him. He speaks spanish and he has fix price in the shop. Market is open 24 hours.

carts: Baskets

by uglyscot

Around Cairo, and probably in small town markets, the work of basket -makers can be purchased. At one time I had a vast collection of different types of baskets [until my husband got rid of them in my absence on the grounds that they collect dust!], and am still fascinated at the skill of the craftsmen. Some weave the grass so fine a grain of sugar would not escape. Others coil the cane, and others leave mesh-like holes. Still others use colour to make attractive designs. Baskets for holding bread on the table, deep baskets for laundry, smaller baskets for keeping oddments tidy on dressing tables etc. They make cheap and useful - though sometimes bulky- gifts. As little or as much as you can afford. Bargain though.
