Water Pipes: HANDICRAFT

by draguza

Over the past couple of decades, the water pipe has become omnipresent in daily life in Egypt. Smoking shisha is no longer just a characteristic feature of Ramadan nights or the fetish of a few. Today, an increasing number are inhaling the molasses, including students, affluent professionals and even women. Is it simply a raging fad reaching its heyday? The result of smokers looking for a ‘safer’ or ‘less haram’ alternative to cigarettes? Or is it a growing addiction that is here to stay? The Egyptians love their water pipes. Some tourists do too.

Shopping-Outdoors: Shopping

by draguza

The shopping here is almost entirely outdoors, unlike an American shopping mall. But just as you would expect of a shopping mall, anything and everything you'd want can be found. Clothing, textiles, toys, items for home improvement, food of all kinds, perfumes, car parts, live chickens and turkeys....yes, it's all here. The shopping here is almost entirely outdoors, unlike an American shopping mall. But just as you would expect of a shopping mall, anything and everything you'd want can be found. And make no mistake about it, the Egyptians are as shrewd at business as any people you'll meet anywhere. Very social, very engaging and very business oriented they'll actively engage you to look and make an offer. They know the price they'll refuse to sell for, but they'll gladly sell for anything more than their minimum and do everything imaginable to make you think the minimum is far above...

All of Egypt is a shop!: Egypt is a shopper's paradise, and a challenge.

by schat

Egypt has more things for sale than you could possibly anticipate. Shopping is practically an art- or at least bargaining is! You will always be offered a "welcome drink" which is of course meant to keep you in the shop longer. But if you're looking anyway, why not have some sweet Egyptian tea or a cold coke? Some of the most common items you'll see: papyrus, sandstone, cotton clothing, perfumes, leather shoes, belly dancing outfits, water pipes, spices, and shawls (they make great tablecoverings or wall hangings). There are some differences in quality, but not as much as they will lead you to believe! The standard response given if you say you saw an item cheaper elseswhere is that THIS one is much better quality, and the cheaper one is of lesser quality, which may or not be true. A good tactic is to counter offer about half of what the "starting price" is. The "last price" is almost...

Various Vendors in Cairo and Luxor: Alabaster is a Great Souvenir

by atufft

Bringing home a nice alabaster vase is probably one of the best souvenirs available in Egypt. The irredescent stone makes a great conversation piece when placed on a lighted base. At the alabaster factory in Luxor, workers lazily appear to be making new jars, grinding them from a single piece of stone as has been done since antiquity. The visitor can try the grinding equipment and appear like one of the workers in a photo as shown below. I wouldn't be surprised if the actual production facility probably uses power grinders, over the romanticized hand tools seen at the "factory", but I really don't know. There is plenty of stock available for purchase, and the prices really are on the cheap side by American-European standards. No doubt better prices are available in Cairo, as Luxor is a tourist trap in general. When purchasing a vase, make sure that the stone is not too flawed with...

Queen Nefertari Museum: Skip the molded statues in Cairo, wait for Luxor

by atufft

In Cairo and elsewhere there are zillions of shops selling molded statues of Ramses and other memorable figures. But, these are as cheap as their price and a burden to carry around. There are dealers of genuine antiquities, but the prices of these are beyond the middle-class pocketbook. Wait until you get to Luxor, where there's one shop called Queen Nefertari Museum. If you wander around central Luxor, south of Luxor temple, you'll eventually spot it. The quality of items seen through the window is clearly above average. Owner Foad Allam claims that his pieces are mostly reproductions created by families, some of which are antique reproductions bought in estate auctions. Thus, the materials used are relatively authentic, although Foad coats pieces with a heavy coat of dust or mud, which needs to be washed off. I recommend talking him into washing off these pieces before buying, to...

Scent of... Egypt

by Diana75

Similar to Papyrus factories, the Perfume factories are another tourists' attraction in Egypt. The visit to a so-called Perfume factory does not offer only a pleasant way for spending an afternoon but it?s also an opportunity for buying special souvenirs for friends and family. The visit usually starts with a presentation of the methods for extracting the essences from flowers, the perfumes being in fact pure oils without alcohol, paraffin or other chemicals. The range of essences usually includes more than 200 different scents, out of which two are extracted from specific Egyptian flowers, lotus and papyrus. Some examples: Jasmine flower, Ramses II, Papyrus or Secret of the Desert (called also Egyptian Viagra). Price: 1 ounce (35 g) - LE 80- (USD 14-)

Buy original Papyruses in Luxor

by Diana75

Beside the interesting visits to Luxor sites, we also stopped to a so called Papyrus Institute, actually a store that sells original papyruses. The average price of a papyrus with the zodiac sign is around 70 LE (USD 14-) and adding a cartouche with the owner's name costs around 10 LE (USD 2-).

Buy peanuts in Luxor

by Diana75

Our Egyptian friend was looking to buy peanuts from Luxor Bazaar, as he said that the peanuts here are the best you can find all over Egypt. And he was right. The taste is special and all my friends back home appreciated very much. The price is very good (7 LE for 1/2 kilo).

Hey get your used Books in Cairo!!!

by TheWanderingCamel

The site is a little known area in Cairo where foreigners and Egyptians find used, rare, hard-to-get or specialized printed material. For example, a tremendous amount of books can be found on the subject of Egyptian antiquities, all at their usual below market discounted prices. As well, many of the shops feature top magazines (fashion, travel, music, business, etc) from all over the world including Japan, Germany, France and America. If you are on the hunt for a certain textbook or cheap computer manual, the Soor El-Azbackaya area will probably fill your needs. The site is also a gold mine for rare and hard-to-get books in many languages, including old Arabic newspapers covering prominent Egyptian events from decades past. NOTE: the prices might have changed since last year------------------Posted by Khadi
