Khan Al-Khalili Bazaar: Not for the faint of heart

by markyg

While I loved Egypt and the Egyptian people, I was continually bothered by shop owners/sellers constantly hassling you to buy, haggling over the price. Their friendliness was often a ruse. Nowhere was this more evident than at the bazaar. I felt like I was being flogged as I walked down the streets of the bazaar as every seller would swarm me with sales pitches. As I got deeper into the bazaar I was finally able to pause and breath. While it is certainly an experience going there, I would recommend shopping elsewhere. This is a place for tourists and students. Our Egyptian guide told us no Egyptian would shop at the bazaar as the prices are too high and the quality often questionable. There is a large bazaar a few streets away where the locals shop. You can find the same stuff you find at the bazaar in any other store/street around Egypt for the same price with less hassle. I found that...

Alabaster : Egypt's rock of ages

by gypsysoul73

Alabaster (a hard marble-like variety of gypsum) vases and figurines are made and sold in many roadside shops by the Valley of the Kings. The use of alabaster dates back to thousands of years ago when the Egyptians used it to line sarcophagi, the walls and ceilins of temples, and in vases. There is a factory/shop in the Village of Quarna in West Thebes that offers a brief demonstration of how alabaster is made into different forms.

all over: Spice up your life while in Aswan

by gypsysoul73

Aswan is the spice capital of Egypt. If you have a passion for cooking, a trip to Aswan's market for some spices is a must. They are piled high in bowls, kept on shelves in jars, laid out in baskets, their scents and colors are everywhere.

Kahn el Kahlili Bazaar: A shopping mecca in the heart of Cairo

by gypsysoul73

Being girls, we were so excited for our visit to the Kahn, Cairo's shopping mecca. I had read about the treasures one can find in the labyrinthine streets of this souk. It surely exceeded my expectations, I only wish I had more time. To appreciate what this place has to offer, would take at least one full day. If the shopping should tire you or whet your appetite, there are many cafe's to choose from both within the Kahn and by the plaza outside. Gold, silver, papyrus, slippers, gallabiyahs, t-shirts, perfumes, antiques, lspices, anterns, 100% egyptian cotton & other fabrics, shisha pipes, everything under the Egyptian sun!

Shops everywhere: An ancient art

by TheWanderingCamel

Whilst the perfumes of Araby may not be to your taste, the delicate, hand-blown glass perfume bottles you see everywhere in shops and bazaars are another matter. Looking for all the world like something a genii would live in -andreminscent of the wonderful spires of the minarets that spear the skies everywhere, they come in a bewildering variety of shapes, sizes and colours and vary in price from next to nothing for a pretty but fairly ordinary bottle to a small fortune for something that really is a little treasure of glowing glass and real gold. The hard part comes in choosing - just make sure you pack it carefully.leyle

Too many , everywhere.....: ONE FANTASTIC DEAL AFTER THE OTHER

by schurlif

I'm not so much pointing out one place where to buy but I'd rather give you a few ideas of what to buy while in Egypt..... Khan el Khalili Bazaar in Cairo is a shoppers paradise ...... But the number of great places to shop is endless..... Jewelry , Local Crafts , Shishas ( water pipes ) , Textiles , Leather goods , Carpets.....That's allready something for beginners..... We made the experience that some shop owners try to rip you off a little bit.... so DO NOT forget to bargain and be tough , if need be , walk out and don't buy......Generally though prices are very accessible.... And if you're lucky ( which is not too hard to be ) you'll find shopowners who will treat you like their own children and make the shopping experience a real nice one.....

Shopping in Khan al-Khalili

by Magda196

There are a lot of guidebooks pedaling advice to Western tourists that discuss the trials and tribulations of bartering for goods with the slick proprietor/operators of bazaars of Khan al-Khalili. They will tell you how to prevent being overcharged for souvenirs; how to protect yourself and your Euro or American Dollar. I think this is all so much hooey! Guide books need to stop telling tourists what to fear and tell them how to enjoy themselves instead. Stop worrying so much about holding on to our money in a country where a single U.S. dollar buys 6x the equivalent it will buy here. Tourist money help support the difficult Egyptian economy and those of us who visit Egypt, should keep this in mind. Don't be foolish -- no one has the right to blatantly take advantage of you --but don't be a miser either. When I walk the streets of Khan al-Khalili I love to engage the vendors and sellers...

EVERYWHERE !: CARVINGS

by BerniShand

Everywhere you go people will try to sell you carvings, try not to get carried away, they ARE heavy, and if you buy in a shop watch them being wrapped so that they are not swapped for an inferior one, our perfect cat was taken away and wrapped securely, when we unwrapped it back home it has mysteriously `lost` an ear you need to haggle, occasionally you get a real bargain, my husband paid only £5 [uk] for four medium sized carvings

SHOPPING BY BOAT

by BerniShand

When you are on a Nile cruise and your boat stops at the lock at Esna expect a fleet of small boats to appear, these are the local traders who come to show you their goodsThey know that soon there will be an `Egyptian Night` on board your boat and you will need a costume.... first you haggle then they put the goods into a plastic bag and throw it onto the deck... their aim is excellent ! you put the money into the bag and throw it back... [right change is advisable] You wont get haute couture but the cotton jabellas are excellent and mine has survived 3 years used as a nightie.....you can of course buy something totally OTT [see the picture] which you will never, ever wear again but for sentimental reasons you will never be able to throw it away we paid £5 for 3 garments... but only after some very tough haggling

Shahinaz Perfumes Palace: Perfumes

by viddra

It's a nice shop where you can find out all about how perfumes are made, how to make a difference between male and female perfumes and choose your own perfume. The owner is very polite and with a good sense of humour. We tried their famous black tea while making up our minds what to buy. I liked Nefertity best. All perfumes are sold in special bottles and their price depends on the capacity of the bottle.
