Nile Pharaous: Souvenirs

by viddra

It's a nice shop where there's everything for everyone. The atmosphere's nice. You can listen to some Egyptian pop music as you're shopping. The guys working there are more than willing to help you, and they won't force you buy anything you don't want to.Here all items have their prices. Here you can find banana skin pictures, bookmarks or calendars, books about Egypt, nice writing pads and cards with Egyptian motifs,Alabaster figures,CDs with Egyptian pop music, etc. Most things here are cheaper than in other shops (e.g.5 Egyptian pounds for a writing pad, 10 for two packs of cards,35 for a CD, 60 for a book)

Bargaining: Survive the shopping experience

by Lamb_Chop

For those who are accustomed to price tags, shopping in Egypt can be very frustrating but once you have mastered the technique, you’ll never go shopping the same way, “What! £2.00 for potatoes, I DON’T think so.”Just remember, shopkeepers will NEVER sell anything at a loss - most things are inflated by at least 500%No matter how “insulting” they think your offer is. Gently increase the price as he lowers the price, eventually you’ll both agree to something, otherwise… DO NOT be afraid to walk out of a shop…If you feel they are too aggressive, say “ thank you” and leave. CAIROKhan el-khalili, is one stop shopping in the Old Islamic Quarter, please take special care to dress conservatively, though it is a major tourist area, please remember you are walking through the "Oldest" area of Egypt and you will attract attention if INAPPROPRIATELY dressed.ASWANFantastic, the shopkeepers are less...

Kodak: Photo Developing

by TheWanderingCamel

There are Kodak stores all over Cairo. I had no difficulty in getting film developed quickly. Of course I was not a professional level so this advice is definite for a basic camera.Check out the link to the Kodak webpage list of all of the shops in Egypt with their phone number. Found it very useful information when I was living in Egypt.-------Posted by Megypt 1 hour photo developingPassport/visa/Student ID photos takenUnderwater CamerasFilmCameraCamera repair (I think)

Various: Visiting Dahab

by McPee

There are no real shops in Taba Heights - only those within the hotels. The place to go on a day trip and within Egypt is Dahab, about 90 minutes drive down the coast. There are plenty of shops, restraunts & pubs to choose from. They specialise in perfumes there.

The souks of Khan El Khalili: Searching for souvenirs in Cairo

by Jannick_L.

The souks are some small streets with a lot of souvenir shops. It is a very crowded place but it is very pleasant to watch how people try to pay less for their souvenirs. You can find all kind of statues of Gods like Anubis, Tutankhamon, the cat Bastet. Sphinxes, water pipes and so on and so on. But beware because even when they say that it is real basalt it is as fake as can be. Never buy gold in those shops, you will pay a lot and it is not 18 carat gold even when they say it is. you will always pay to much. For example for one statue in so called basalt they asked 17 euro, finally I payed 6 euro and even this is to much, but don't try to hard or they will get angry. In fact you are the "rich" tourist in their eyes.

many: Alabaster

by Myndo

Alabaster carving into vases and other figurines is a local craft in Egypt. In most of the factories where these stone items come from, they will give you a short introduction into how they are done.It is interesting, because hey also show you how some fake the granit-figures by making them heavier (those are not cared stone, but cement like things with old iron parts in it). Everything carved by hand out of this stone.vases, plates, figurines etc. well, what do you want to pay?

many: Perfume

by Myndo

If you are allergic to perfume or do not like strong smells, you may better stay outside any Perfume factory.First thing you get here is a small overview over the ground substances they have (with demonstration) and some of the fix combinations (with demonstration), and then you may say which ones you would like to buy ... any questions? Some of the fixed mixtures they have they say are the ground for some well known perfumes as Armani for men (Tut ench amun is the mixture). Perfumes mixtures and ground substances etc.and do not forget these fine glass bottles... well, how high do you want to go?

many: Papyrus

by Myndo

Papyrus-making, another one of the world known Egyptian crafts.Have a look at a short demonstration on the Papyrus plant and how they make their paper out of it. Actually that is quite easy: you cut the Papyrus plant into thin stripes, let them in the wtare for some time, take them out, place them diagonally over each other, then press them and let them under the press for some more time -presto!And then you paint colorful pictures on it (preferably scenes from gods and such which you found in some tombs) and sell them to the tourists.Be careful if you buy them. There are some around that are made from cheap banana leafes. The scam should be able to be seen, when you hold it against the light. Papyrus has a classical structure. Papyrus, Papyrus, Papyruswith Hieroglyphs or scenes of gods or modern paintings well, how high do you want to go?

Khan el Khalili: Buy anything

by Goienaga

Choose any shop in there. Handcrfats Always bargain hard, and if necessry get ungry with them, do not pay more than half of the first price, and usually it is too much walk around first and compare the first price, then pay pay half of the lowest price.

The market of souvenirs close PYRAMIDS

by JuliaMac

Near Pyramids it is possible to buy many souvenirs. Papyruses, books, figurines and etc. But there is it much more expensively. Though they speak that it is possible to bargain but they reduce the prices reluctantly.
