Aswan

by al2401

Of all the cities in Egypt, Aswan is my favourite. I love the brightness and there is a lot of colour - not as busy nor as dusty as Cairo. I was lucky enough to stay at the Basma Hotel which is on high ground and has wonderful views of the city - especially watching the feluccas travel home at the end of the day.Abu Simbel is a must see (see Abu Simbel page) - travel from Aswan by bus (several hours each way) or plane (20min each way with Egypt Air). Also the temple of Philae (see Philae page). Not so well known is the Nubian Museum (see page) and a trip to the high dam - both definitely worth a visit. while at the dam see the 'Lotus Flower' a gift from Russia who partnered with Egypt in the construction of the dam. A felucca trip on the Nile is a great way to spend a couple of hours, as is a visit to a Nubian village. Don't forget high tea at the Cataract Hotel - made famous by Agatha...

Nubia Museum - Aswan

by al2401

When the Aswan High Dam was to be constructed in the 1960's, UNESCO appealed to the world's Egyptologists and archaeologists to save the history of Nubian Egypt before they were drowned by the waters of Lake Nasser. The 'Nubian Rescue Campaign' saw thousands of artefacts recovered and several important sites relocated. The number of artefacts salvaged prompted UNESCO to establish a museum where they could be displayed as close to their origins as possible. The museum was opened in 1997. The architecture is styled along traditional Nubian village design and the buildings are set in a terraced landscape of lawns, garden and waterfalls. There is also an open-air stage and amphitheatre. The museum contains artefacts from the Nubian Dynasty. The Nubians came from the lands to the south of Egypt and many of their significant sites now lie under Lake Nasser. The museum has a section dedicated to...

Abu Simbel

by al2401

The two temples at Abu Simbel, those of Rameses II and his wife Nefertari, were discovered, almost covered in sand, in 1813. They became a major tourist attraction of the Victorian era. The site of Abu Simbel became the focus of another historic event when they were successfully cut up, removed and reconstructed to save inundation by the waters of Lake Nasser after the construction of the Aswan High Dam. With the support of UNESCO the project began in 1964. The temples were raised over 60 metres up the cliff from where they were built over 3,000 years ago and reconstructed exactly as they had stood with respect to each other and to the sun. An artificial mountain was constructed to cover the temples. The project was completed in 1968.This is a must see for any visit to Eqypt. You can take a bus from Aswan (a few hours) or fly (25 minutes). The flight is not that much more than the bus...

Ballooning over Luxor

by al2401

If you like ballooning or even if you have never tried - this is a once in a lifetime thing to do. I was picked up from the Nile boat on the East bank before dawn and transpoted across the river to catch the balloon - literally! Being in one of the second groups we had to follow the balloon in a jeep and wait for it to land, then it was one out, one in so as to keep the weight even until we were all ready and then we took off. The flight itself took between 40-45min and it was fantastic. From up there you get to see the layout of the Valleys of the Kings, Queens and Artisans and how the fertile soil just suddenly stops - a reminder a ancient times. The aeronaut in charge of the balloon was extremely competent.

Luxor

Luxor Temple. This temple of Amun was built mainly by two of the most famous pharaohs - Amenhotep III (1390 - 1352 BC) and Rameses II (1279 - 1213 BC). It was added to by Tutankhamun. The avenue of sphinxes once reached all the way to Karnak. The pair of the remaining obelisk now stands in Paris. The entrance originally had six colossi - two of Rameses II sitting on his throne. Two more of Rameses II, seated on black granite thrones, guard the entrance to the collonade of Amenhotep III. The thrones bear the carvings of the god Thoth and his wife the godess Seshat, both gods of learning and writing.Horse drawn carriage rides are a popular mode of transport to and from the temple.Even though this temple is not as large as Karnak I found it more interesting and just as magnificent.

Karnak Temple

by al2401

A must see for any traveller to Egypt - Egyptophile or not. The complex is amazing in that not only is so much of it still standing but the colours of the heiroglyphs and paintings is still bright. It is a temple to Amun Ra and has been added to by each pharaoh who succeeded the throne - Rameses II & III, Tutankamun and Queen Hatshepsut are some. It was linked to the temple at Luxor by an avenue of sphinxes.

Mount Sinai climb

by chizz

Mount Sinai. whose peaks rises 2285m above sea level is rumoured to be the biblical mountain where Moses received the Ten Commandments. We had the option to climb the mountain as part of our Egypt tour, so we set off at 2.45am in order to see the sunrise at 6.15am.We took the camel path route armed with torches as the ground tends to be very uneven in parts with many rocks and stones underfoot. Several people also opted to ride camels most of the way up for 80LE return. There are several rest stops along the way selling water and other refreshments and you can rent blankets for a small fee.You can watch the sunrise from below the Steps of Repentance or choose to climb the 3750 steps to the top as we did. Be aware though that the steps can be quite steep in parts, so best to wear comfortable shoes and take small breaks, unless you are quite fit! Also take a jacket as it can get quite cold...

Aswan, Felucca Boat ride.

by MikeySoft

Here is the phone number of Felucca Boat caption in Aswan. +20 12 81 65 238 I used him for a 1/2 day feluccas ride in Aswan. He is Nubian and seems very honest. I could see it in his eyes that I was overcharged when I told him the price I paid for a cruise boat. He can also help you with cruises to Luxor should you wish.PS I didn't understand all the detail. But I think the felucca caption got his boat from a charity company to help him make a living. Cairo Museum

by Robmj

Around 12,000 exhibts await you in this enormous and incredible museum. Its spread over several layers and you could take days here depending on your fetish for ancient artifacts. We spend half a day and by then were museum'ed out. Identify the highlights of what you want to see and follow the provided map to these. Highlights for me were the death mask of Tutenkamun, statue of Chephren (creator of one of the Pyramids) and the mummy of Ramses II.But when in Cairo, do not miss this place.

Cairo Museum of antiquities

by groovy_23

This is one of the most incredible museums I have ever been to. It costs 50 EGP to get in. There are 2 floors and the place is full of mummies, sarcophagi, statues, and other ancient artifacts. The organization is a little loose though...Many of the exhibits don't have any kind of info saying what they are. There are a few ways to get the info though: You can hire one of the guides outside the museum near the fountain, you can rent the audio guide inside for 20 egyptian pounds ( 4dollars?) but they will require you to leave your passport, or you can find an in depth book that explains the place inside and out. there is a little book shop right inside the doors that might have something like this (DON'T buy a map from there, they are useless). I can't vouch for the guides-who knows how much they really know and how much they actually make up. The price for the live guides is always...
