Take a Tour to Masada

by gabriellefox

Two thousand years after its construction, the northern palace perched on the precipitous northern cliff edge of the Masada plateau remains a spectacular tourist attraction. It can be reached by cable car or you take a gruelling hike up the mountain if you are feeling energetic. The 'hanging-palace' on the northern cliff of Masada has some walls which were plastered externally and internally, with frescoes decorating the principal rooms some of which can still be seen clearly.Masada is renowned for the palaces and fortifications of Herod the Great (reigned 37-4 BC), king of Judaea under the Romans, and for its resistance to the Roman siege in AD 72-73. Following the fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Second Temple (ad 70), the Masada garrison--the last remnant of Jewish rule in Palestine--refused to surrender and was besieged by the Roman legion X Fretensis under Flavius Silva....

Egyptian museum

by ollyf

We were rushed around the most popular exhibits in a couple of hours - it was, after all, a day tour - but apparently there are something like 120,000 items on display here, which means the only way to see it all would be to live in Cairo and visit every day. Even if you spent only a minute looking at each item, that's still 2,000 hours!Anyway, I got to see the most obvious attractions, such as the mummies, Cleopatra stuff, pyramids stuff, hieroglyphics, various royal and war items. It was a hugely impressive museum but a very rushed look at a very small part of it, so I can't comment on anything other than the institution's vast scale. Absolutely a must-see if you're in Cairo.

Not to be missed!

No matter how short your time in Cairo is, no visit to Egypt is complete without some time spent in the treasure house that is the National Museum. You may have to be content with just a few highlights - the fabulous wealth of the boy-king Tutankhamen is the biggest drawcard - but there is much to be gained from a prowl through the lesser galleries and a return visit, if time permits, is even more rewarding. A very recent visitor tells me photography is no longerr permitted at all - cameras had to be checked in and bags were x-rayed before entry. What a pity.

Cairo Museum

by mad4travel

The Egyptian Museum is situated at Tahrir square in Cairo. It was built during the reign of Khedive Abbass Helmi II in 1897, and opened on November 15, 1902 (More History). It has 107 halls. At the ground floor there are the huge statues. The upper floor houses small statues, jewels, Tutankhamon treasures and the mummies. The Museum also comprises a photography section and a large library. The Egyptian museum comprises many sections arranged in chronological order More than a million and half tourists visit the museum annually, in addition to half a million Egyptians. Unfortunately, it may feel like they are all there the same time you are as it can get a bit crowded! The queues can often be long for entrance tickets so go early. The treasures of Tutankhamun are a must see. There is a separate entrance fee for the mummies hall.

The Egyptian Museum - Cairo

by luv2tango

The Egyptian Museum in Cairo cannot be missed. It houses over 120,000 artifacts from 3500BC - 500AD. One of the highlights of the museum is the King Tut exhibit, where you can view many of the treasure's found in his tomb, including his solid gold burial mask as well as his innermost coffin, also made of solid gold. Also not to be missed is the 'Mummy Room' where you can see the mummy of Rameses II. Photography is no longer allowed in the museum, you cannot even take your camera in with you. They have metal detectors at the entrance and if they find a camera in your bag you will be required to leave it at the camera check at the front gate. Admission to the museum is 20LE, the Mummies Room is an additional 40LE.

Egyptian Must-Sees

by roxy-surfer-gurl

The first stop of course is the pyramids and the Sphinx at Giza. You are able to go inside the main pyramid if you like, however if you are claustraphobic or faint hearted, it would be wise not to go. Be careful taking photos around Giza as locals may try to charge you if they get in the shot! From Cairo travel east across the Suez canal and south throught the Sinai desert. This journey takes you through out the old war zone of the 7 day war and you can see abandoned shelters and weapons just lying around. This peninsular is biblically historic, it is on Mount Sinai that Moses was said to have received the 10 commandments and dotted around are places with biblical references - you can even see the burning bush (wink, wink). The scenery is spectacular, there is both sandy and rocky desert and it is very mountainous. There are many villages about and the people are generally very welcoming...
