Temple of Kom Ombo

Kom Ombo, in ancient times, was known as Pa-Sabek, or Land of Sobek, the ancient crododile god. True to their nature, the Macedonian Greek pharaohs exploited this when they built a temple here, not just in Sobek's honor but also to that of Haroeris (Horus, the Elder).In keeping with the two-god theme, everything in this temple - from the pylon, the entrances, the altar - are presented in twin form - to honor the two gods. Other interesting features include the series of reliefs of what could be the ancient science (or art?) in birthgiving, reliefs of Ptolemy enjoying the blessing of the gods of Upper and Lower Egypt, one of the earliest calendars on record (some say earliest) and of mummified crocodiles.My visit to the temple was part of an organized Nile cruise between Aswan and Luxor - perhaps the most convenient way to see the other "must-visit" sites given the tight security measures...
