Memphis

by vesna04

Memphis is situated some 20 km from Cairo. It was the most important city for the Old Kingdom of Egypt. As a capital since about 2000 BC it was also the biggest city in Egypt at the time. The most importent site is the huge statue of Ramses II which is realy in very good condition. There you can also find the Alabaster Sphinx as well as a beautiful gardens with some more statues.

Saqqara

by vesna04

Saqqara is actualy an ancient necropolis in the time when Memphis was a capital. It's most famous site is the Step Pyramid of Zoser (Djoser), the oldest perserved Pyramid in Egypt as well as the oldest stone structure known in the history. Besides this there are another 16 Pyramides but not in the very good conditions. The Pyramid of Pharaoh Unas should be mentioned here as the first Pyramyd that have "talked", in fact, the first anciant texts were found here used as a decoration of the burial room walls.

Pyramids of Giza

by vesna04

The only remaining monuments of 7 wonders of the world. They are situated about 25 km from Cairo center. The most famous are Great ( Cheops ), Chephren, Mykerinus pyramids and of course, a Great Sphinx.Do not ride the camels arround here as the owner will charge yoy a lot.

The Hatshepsut Temple

by vesna04

This Temle wa devoted to the 5th pharaoh of the 18th dinasty, one of the most successful female pharaohs in anciant Egypt.Everything that was conected to this lady was sistematicly erased by the pharaoh Thutmose III as a revenge. She held him in the golden prison for a long period of time so she could rule by Egypt. This Temple was rebuilt by a big pharaoh Ramses II.Recently her mummy was found and was at a display when I visited the National Museum in Cairo.

Luxor

by vesna04

It is a must while in Egypt. You will be amaized with the monuments of the anciant egiptians ( the «new »kingdom). The Valley of the Kings, the Karnk Temle, the Luxor (small) Temple are just some of the monuments it would be pity to be missed. The eastern bank of the Nile river was the place to praise the living pharaohs and the western side (where sun is passing away every night) as you can guess was a place for the eternal homes to be built.

Dendera

by misr

Temple of Hathor. The temple of Hathor in Dendera is well preserved. You can get there either by land in a convoy or by a boat along the Nile. The trip on the Nile from Luxor to Dendera, takes 4h to get there and 6h to get back. The temple you see today, is from the Ptolemaic period, but it is built on the older one.The temple has beautiful colums with the head of Hathor and the ceiling inside the temple is something to see. There is also underground crypts. There are beautiful pictures and still with colors, in these crypts. The most famos place in the temple is on the roof. There is a small room on the roof and in the ceiling of this room you find the oval zodiac. The original of this zodiac is in France, this is only a black plaster cast of it. I was a bit dissapointed when I was looking at it. But in the same room, in the ceiling, is a carved picture of godess Nut, that was more...

Temple of Kom Ombo

by Tijavi

Kom Ombo, in ancient times, was known as Pa-Sabek, or Land of Sobek, the ancient crododile god. True to their nature, the Macedonian Greek pharaohs exploited this when they built a temple here, not just in Sobek's honor but also to that of Haroeris (Horus, the Elder). In keeping with the two-god theme, everything in this temple - from the pylon, the entrances, the altar - are presented in twin form - to honor the two gods. Other interesting features include the series of reliefs of what could be the ancient science (or art?) in birthgiving, reliefs of Ptolemy enjoying the blessing of the gods of Upper and Lower Egypt, one of the earliest calendars on record (some say earliest) and of mummified crocodiles. My visit to the temple was part of an organized Nile cruise between Aswan and Luxor - perhaps the most convenient way to see the other "must-visit" sites given the tight security measures...

Temple of Horus in Edfu

by Tijavi

Second only to Karnak Temple in size, the Temple of Horus in Edfu represents one of the most well-preserved temples of pharaonic Egypt. This is partly because the temple was built during the latter Ptolemaic period by the Macedonian Greek pharaohs - the Ptolemies. Work on the temple started in 237 BC during the time of Ptolemy III, and was not "finished" 200 years later during the time of Ptolemy XII, Cleopatra's father. As in the other Ptolemaic temples in Kom Ombo, Esna and Philae, this too, had its roots in politics rather than religion - as a means of achieving legitimacy by associating themselves (the Ptolemaic pharaohs) with the gods of pharaonic Egypt. The worship of Horus, the falcon god, and one of the most popular, was centered in the town of Edfu. It was only fitting that the Ptolemaic pharaohs "exploit" this by building temple of large proportions in Horus' honor at this...

Camel, in Egypt sand country!!

by wsloh

I don't know how much it costed but camel ride was part of the itinerary of the tour I was in. I was fortunate enough to have a camel to myself as I'm quite large by size and weight. The initial part can be very scary especially when the camel handler make the camel stand up. It really felt like a coaster ride. Then we proceeded about half a mile into the desert towards the Great Pyramids and the Sphynx. They'll stop you somewhere out in the dunes to take photos of you with your camera. I had a good photographer in my camel handler. Hence the picture.....(s) and we really enjoyed ourselves. We gave he handlers some tips, but the tour operator scolded the handlers and make them hand back the tips to us, as they have already provided for tips and didn't want the handlers to ask harrass their customers for tips, which was what happened, they asked us many times for it.
