Cairo old town and citadel

by mad4travel

Home to Egypts rulers for over 700 years the Citadel was founded in 1176 by the famed muslim commander Saladin. The citadel offers spectacular views over Cairo. It is dominated by the 19th Century Mosque of Mohammed Ali.This was built in the mid 19th century at the order of the reformist ruler Mohammed Ali who is regarded as the founder of modern Egypt. It is modelled on the Aghia Sophia in IstanbulThere is also the mosque of an-Nasr Mohammed, a persian style mosque with coloured arches not unlike those found in the Mesquita in Cordoba, Spain. This is a much older mosque with a large outdoor courtyard for prayer dating from the 14th Century. The citadel walls extend for over 2 miles and is punctuated with towers and gates.Within the walls there are also the Police and Military museums and the mosque of Suleiman Pasha built in 1528

Abu Simbul

by Joenes

About 260 kilometres from Aswan you will find Abu Simbul with two temples made by Ramses II.The only way to get there is by convoy and will take you 3 hours up and 3 hours back....long but absolutely worth it.The biggest of the two contains a lot of carvings of the military power of Ramses II and the smaller one Ramses build for his Queen Nefertari and contains carvings of religious rituals. It is unbelievable that they actually MOVED this whole temple to this place as a result of the High Dam and the birth of Lake Nasser.

Aswan, Kitchener Island

by Joenes

North of Elephantine Island is Kitchener Island (also Known as The Island Of Trees). This botantical garden was started by Lord Horatio Kitchener, the English General who fought in the Sudan in 1898. The island is filled with beautiful plants and birds.

Tip Photo
Aswan, Elephantine Island

by Joenes

It is a good idea to take a felucca and let it sail you among the islands in this part of the Nile. There are several islands you can visit. For instance Elephantine Island, the history of Aswan started here, where you will find two Museums and a archeological site with findings of different times.Even the remains of a Roman village has been discovered here.

Tip Photo
Aswan, Philae Temple

by Joenes

This beautifull temple holds in it the first lovestory in history.I won't tell you the story cause that would spoil the tour....if you have a good guide you will enjoy the story as well as the temple of course. It is only reachable with a motorboat (or one of those big Nile cruise ships).

Aswan, High Dam and Lake Nasser

by Joenes

This dam is the cause of a lot of moving of temples and even an entire Nubian Village. With help of the USSR it was build to prevent the Nile from flooding and to get electricity. The Philae Temple and The Abu Simbul Temple have been moved and rebuild stone by stone because they were situated at the bottom of Lake Nasser! With a lot of financial help from the west they pulled this of.It took a lot of time,5 years for the Abu Simbul Temple alone!

Tip Photo
Aswan

by Joenes

Aswan has been renovated in the last years and because of that if feels like a richer and neater city then Luxor but according to the locals that's not true.Around Aswan is alot to see an do....The Philae Temple, Aswan High Dam and Lake Nasser, Elepanthine Island, musea and it is the closest city to the Abu Simbul Temple.Alongside the nile there are a lot of great and cheap restaurants that mostly are floating in the Nile.

Kom Ombo, two temples in one!

by Joenes

The Temple knowns as Kom Ombo is actually consisting of two temples; The Temple Of Sobek and The Temple of Horus. Everything is duplicated along the main axis. There are two entrances, two hypostyle halls and two santuaries. On the outside of the temple you will find the leftovers of a well, a mamisi (birthhouse) and the little Chapel of Hathor with hundreds of crocodile mummies, who came from a necropolis made just for them.Due to the concoy schedule you have to stay here for three hours (if you are coming from Luxor). They build a nice boulevard alongside the Nile and there are some shops and places to have a drink or something to eat.

Tip Photo
Edfu, The Temple of Horus

by Joenes

The main attraction of Edfu is the Temple of Horus which is considered by most to be the best preserved cult temple in Egypt. It is one of the biggest and most impressive temples I have been to. It was a shame that due to the timeschedule of the convoys (I did the trip from Luxor) you can only spend one hour here.

Tip Photo
Dendera!!

by Joenes

Just a few hour busdrive from Luxor (in a police escort unfortunately) you will find Dendera where you HAVE to visit the Hathor Temple and all the buildings surrounding it.I have seen a lot of temples allready but this one beats them all.One of the reasons that the temple has been preserved so well inside is because it still has a roof!! It is absolutely stunning to walk around and it is impossible to really see and grasp it all in the 2 hours time you have before the escort goes back to Luxor..:-(. One of the famous things is the Zodiac Calendar which is on the first floor.Hathor was defender of children amnog other things. But the temple isn't all there is! You will see the whole area is surrounded by Roman walls and within these walls you can walk down to Cleopatra's swimmingpool (she came her in the summer), a beautiful Isis temple and much more.THIS IS REALLY A HOT TIP!
