Luxor, Banana Island by Felucca

by Joenes

If you want a relaxing afternoon take a felucca (small sailing boat) in the afternoon and let it take you to Banana Island where you will have to pay 5 LE (Egyptian Pounds) and you will get a tour over the island where they grow banana's, oranges, mangos and let you eat as many as you want. After you have visited the island let the felucca stay on the water to watch the beautiful sunset over the Nile!

Luxor, Archeology Sites

by Joenes

There is still a LOT to discover and if you go to Egypt in the winter you might get lucky like we did.The site on the picture is right next to the Ramesseum and they are working on the temple of Amenhotep.

Tip Photo
Luxor, Medinet Habu

by Joenes

This is the death temple of Ramses III. Medinet Habu stands for "City of Habu" where this temple was build. To me one of the most impressive and most beautiful temples in Luxor. It is very big and on a lot of walls the colours survived the 3000 years!!!!!It makes you feel very small and when you can imagine how it must have looked back then, with also a lot of gold an marble floors, you feel even smaller....:-))

Tip Photo
Luxor, The Ramesseum

by Joenes

Very impressive temple . Things to see here are for instance the pieces of the biggest statue of a farao ever made in Egypt and the carving of the battle of Cadisj against the hitites which was the result of the first treaty ever.Almost on every piece of stone Egyptians carved paintings or stories and all with a meaning!

Tip Photo
Luxor, Colossi of Memnon

by Joenes

These two huge statues where once the guards of the temple of Amenhophis III on the westbank of the Nile. They are made out of 1 piece of stone!!!!!Unbelievable they were able to pull this off 3000 years ago.

Tip Photo
Luxor, Workers Village

by Joenes

In this workers village lived all the people that were working on the tombs in the Valley of the Kings. The road from the village to the valley is still there. The people who lived here where not allowed to leave the village because the place of the tombs had to stay a secret. It is hard to believe that at least 500 people lived in this village with very narrow "streets".On top of the hill you will see houses for the French archeologists when they came over.

Tip Photo
Luxor, Valley of the Nobles

by Joenes

In the Valley of the Nobles the rich and important people were buried as well as the priests. In contrast with the Valley of the Kings it feels more real because they did not make it some sort of "tourist paradise" and if you are lucky you'll have a guide that shows you mummies and mummy leftovers. It is fun and interesting to go as deep as your guide wants to take you!

Tip Photo
Luxor, Temple of Hatsepsut

by Joenes

This is the temple of the first female Farao and is best known because of the horrifying bloodbath of 1997 when a lot of mainly Swiss tourists died and a lot of people got injured. As a result the Police and Military were trippled and the travelling in convoys started.

Tip Photo
Luxor, Tomb of Ay (Valley of the Kings)

by Joenes

This is a very special tomb and not many tours tell you the story or even include it in the tour!Farao Toetanchamon died at a very young age and the Tomb for him wasn't ready yet so they put him in a smaller room in the Valley of the Kings. This tomb has exactly the same wallpaintings as the famous tomb in the valley. There are rumours the High Priest Ay killed Toetanchamon to become Farao himself .He was buried here after a 2-year reign as a Farao.

Tip Photo
Luxor, Karnak Temple

by Joenes

This is a very big and impressive temple where every farao left something to remember him by,like the obelixes of Hatshepsut. You can easy wander around here for at least an hour.A HOT TIP......if you are interested like me in this ancient civilization go see the Sound & Light Show where the temple lits up in a lightshow and the story of Thebes and the Farao's is being told to you through giant speakers. The tour is available in several languages and will cost you 55 LE (Egyptian Pounds).
