Luxor

by Joenes

Luxor is THE centre of the old Egyptian culture. Known as Thebes it has been the capital of the Egypts during the reign of the faraos. The city is divided in two parts, the side of life (eastbank of the Nile) and the side of death (westbank of the Nile). The centre is very alive and busy and the streets are mostly not paved. You can take horse and carriage, a cab or a bike to get around and personally I would go for the bike because you won't have to hassle you're way in and you can go where YOU want to go!The Karnak Temple is the most famous attraction on the eastbank while you will find The Valley of the Kings and all the other famous temples on the westbank of the Nile.Crossing the Nile is easy because there a lot of motorboats that will get you across for less then 10 pounds.Don't forget to go sailing on the Nile in a felucca (small sailing ship) at sunset!

Hurghada, Bedouin Village in the Dessert

by Joenes

You can go on an excursion from Hurghada into the dessert to visit a bedouin village. You can go by Jeeps,Quads and Camels. The dessert is fascinating and so are the bedouins. You can make a camel ride, smoke the shish (waterpipe) and enjoy a gorgeous sunset before you have a meal with the bedouins at candle light.

Hurghada

by Joenes

Hurghada has an old an a new part of town. The old part is better cause it shows the real life in Egypt while in then new part there are only hotels, all roads are neatly paved and it is very quiet. The town itself is explored in a day but there are a lot of possibilities in the immediate surroundings like diving or snorkling in the Red Sea,go on a trip to Luxor (don't take a one day trip though!) or visit bedouines in the dessert. At the main street there are heaps of cosy and cheap restaurants and tourist shops of course.

Alexandria, The Muntazah Complex

by Joenes

On the outside of Alexandria you will find this last memory of the time kings ruled over Egypt.Ordinary people were not allowed to enter the gardens or anything else on the complex.Farouk was the last king to reside in this summer palace at the sea.Now the palace is the residency of the president and the gorgeous gardens are open to all.Very nice to walk through!

Tip Photo
Alexandria, The Catacombs of Kom El Shouqafa

by Joenes

Amazing architecture that is a mix of Roman and Greek styles while funerary motifs are pure ancient Egyptian which is very rare to say the least. It has amazing winding stairs!Unfortunately I had to leave my camera at the gate so I only have a picture from outside..:-(

Tip Photo
Alexandria, Fort of Qaitbay

by Joenes

This almost fairytale-like castle was build on one of the ancient seven wonders of the world, Alexandria's ancient lighthouse. It is a great feeling to wander through the castle and it also gives you great views over the Mediterranean Sea as well as Alexandria.Just before you enter the fort you will find a small museum which has some weird things on display..:-)

Tip Photo
Alexandria, Pompeys Pillar

by Joenes

A huge pillar that was originally build for the Roman emperor Diocletian but was later named Pompeys Pillar. The story goes that the Romans had a dinnerparty on top of this pillar...:-)The pillar is located in a very nice park where you can have a strawl.

Alexandria

by Joenes

An absolutely stunning city that is also the favourite of most Egyptians I talked to.Being situated at the Mediterranean Sea Alexandria has a different climate then the largest part of Egypt. Alexandria is also by far the cleanest city in Egypt! The gorgeous beaches invite you to lie down and don't get up anymore but that is not an option (hahaha) because there is so much to see here. Not only the old Egyptians left their marks here but also the Romans and the Greek which resulted in a lot of different ancient sites and even mixed ones. You will also find the Palace of the last king of Egypt here where the president has his quarters now.Just read the following tips and you will understand Alexandria is a must when you visit Egypt...:-)

Tip Photo
Memphis

by Joenes

There is not much left of the once so proud capital of Egypt. They collected the leftovers and placed them in a little open air museum. The biggest "attraction" is one of the two huge Ramses II statues (the other one is located in Cairo) that survived the years.

Tip Photo
Sakkarah

by Joenes

At this funerary complex you will find, beside some beautiful mastabas (graves in the rocks), the first ever build step pyramid (Zoser's Pyramid) and the leftovers of the House of the South. You can visit the mastabas where they burried their leaders before the pyramids were build.
