Gizeh

by Joenes

The place where you will find the famous pyramids of Cheops,Chefren,Mykerinos and some smaller ones that were build for the queens. In front of these incredible structures you will find the Great Sphinx guarding them. You will be hasled a million times but as long as you say no once and just keep walking you will be allright...:-)You can walk around the enormous area or hire a camel or horse which is a good idea if you want to see it ALL and don't have a lot of time.

Cairo, Camel Market

by Joenes

A lot of hotels offer you a trip to a big camel market a few hours drive outside of Cairo.A security guard will lead you through this hectic market. If you are an animal lover (like me) this might not be such a good idea because they treat the camels extremely bad. Their legs are tied together so they can't run away and if they still try to do that they are hit severely.I learned one new thing though: 90% of the camels at this market will end up on a food plate while I thought that most of them where used for transport.

Cairo, The Citadel

by Joenes

Across the street from the Sultan Hassan Mosque you will find The Citadel which is one of the most famous examples of medieval warfare. You will find some musea and mosques here with the Muhammed Ali Mosque as the biggest one.Just behind the Citadel are the Mukatan Hills where you have stunning panorama's over Cairo.

Cairo, Sultan Hassan Mosque

by Joenes

This a huge mosque that you can actually enter quite easily after paying a small fee. It gives you a good idea of what are typical things inside a mosque like the bathing place in the middle where the muslims have to wash themselves first.Right next to this mosque you will find the El Rifai Mosque and across the street The Citadel with the Muhammed Ali Mosque.

Coptic or Old Cairo

by Joenes

Coptic Cairo was for me the most beautiful and serene part of Cairo. The peace here is in sharp contrast with the rest of this metropole. The story goes that the holy family (Maria,Joseph and Jesus) rested here. The two biggest churches are the very impressive Mar Girgis Church (St.George) that was build on an old Roman tower and The Hanging Church which has a beautiful entrance and was build on old Roman walls. It is also worth to wander around the coptic cemetary where you will find some weird and extravagant graves.Wandering around the small and cosy alleys of coptic Cairo you feel miles away from the metropole Cairo is.

Cairo

by Joenes

A city with 19 million(!) people can only be a very chaotic place and that it is...:-)The good part is that there is so much to see and not only in Cairo itself but also in its immediate surroundings where you will find the famous pyramids at Gizeh,Zoser's Pyramid at Sakkarah,a huge statue of Ramses II in the former capital Memphis and even a camel market.Have fun checking the tips and I hope they prove to be helpfull to you.

Luxur Mesium

by Bashir2005

One of the best displays of antiquities in Egypt is located at the Luxor Museum opened in 1975. Housed within a modern building, the collection is limited in the number of items, but they are beautifully displayed. The admission price is high, but it is well worth the visit. Visiting hours can be somewhat restricted, so find out upon arrival in Luxor. Upon entering the museum, there is a small giftshop on the right. Once inside the main museum area, two of the first items that catch one's attention are an enormous red granite head of Amenhotep III and the cow-goddess head from the tomb of Tutankhamun. Spaced out around the ground floor are masterpieces of wonderful sculptures. If you come to Luxor, this small museum is very charming.

St. Catherine's Monastery and hike up Mt. Sinai

by dln6874

The top of Mt. Sinai is where Moses is said to have received the 10 commandments. It's a pretty nice view up there. At the base of Mt. Sinai is the St. Catherine's Monastery where the burning bush was. The hike up is about 2.5-3 hrs with only the last bit being a little steep. Most people seem to do the sunrise, but we did the sunset, and that was nice too. Be sure to bring a torch tho, as it will (obviously) be dark after sunset and the trails will not be lit.

The Pyramids of Giza and Sphinx

by dln6874

The pyramids are one of the original 7 wonder of the world. Need I say more? There are three big ones still standing (and bunch of little ones) in one area. You can see them up close, and even go inside some of them. However, you can also get a panorama shot of all three. I think most tour operators will take you there too. That's where you can do longer camel rides and buy bunch of souvenirs.

The Sphinx

by mary2u99

This is the most fascinating monuments of ancient Egypt. Although it does show it is worn by time but it is still amazing. The Sphinx is 20 metres high and 60 metres long. The dimensions of the face are so large that the eyes themselves are 2 metres high.
