Bedouin Evening

by gabriellefox

Once a week, the hotel holds an optional Bedouin night, offering the opportunity to sample the traditional cuisine of the Bedouin. This makes a lovely change from eating at the hotel restaurants although the catering is of the same high quality. Eating out under the stars and being entertained by belly dances and Egyptian Folklore dancers is great.

Visitors to the Underwater Observatory Marine Park in Eilat can experience the wonders of the Red Sea without having to dip so much as a finger in the water. The park offers a dazzling array of experiences. There's the Circular Reef Tank, which presents a sample of the rich assortment of species that live around a reef, then there's the Shark Pool, which holds 15 different types of shark. The Young Turtle Pool nurtures baby hawksbill turtles for release back into the wild, and is the first place in the world which has succeeded in breeding them in captivity. The Dolphin Reef, Eilat, on the shores of the Red Sea, is an ecological site unique in Israel and throughout the world where visitors can enjoy a natural atmosphere, magical views, secluded beach, together with the unusual opportunity of meeting and observing dolphins in their natural habitat. Is is just a short ride over the Israel Border from Taba Heights.A group of “bottlenose” dolphins, including babies born at the site, maintain their daily routine of hunting, playing, courting and socializing. They are free to choose between human company or to continue their daily routine in the group. Visitors can enjoy getting close to the dolphins from the floating piers and observation points or by taking a guided snorkel or dives, suitable to anyone who is not afraid of getting wet. All equipment can be hired and excellent staff are on hand to take you through step by step. Lockers, showers,...

Excursion to the Dead Sea Spa

by gabriellefox

The Dead Sea Spa is located on the shore of the Dead Sea about 45 kilometres south-west of Amman. It has a private beach and two swimming pools, with a sun-deck and sun loungers. There is a restaurant and a pool bar. In the spa therapists offer mud-pack and other skin and beauty treatments. There are also 2 small suphur pools which you can spend no more than 15 minutes in. After that shower and stroll down to the mud trough and cover yourself from head to toe, then take a walk down to the sea (about 10 mins) As you walk the sun starts to bake the mud which draws out many toxins. You can either choose to shower it off before getting into the sea or scrub it off in the sea. You get a salt water exfoliation at the same time and your skin feels silky and soft. The Dead Sea is the lowest point on earth and is renowned for its saline waters. It is a great place to relax either with a gentle...

Pyramids and Sphinx

by ollyf

These are every bit as amazing as you'd imagine. To stand by them and imagine how people without mechanised technology erected such enormous structures is just mind-blowing. Obviously you can get some wonderful photos too (unfortunately I lost mine, hence the lack of any on this page), but you won't have the place to yourself - far from it! I went in December, a relatively quiet month, and it was SWARMING with tourists and hawkers. You won't have a moment's peace, and a trip into the interior of Pyramid Three is a very hurried affair. Still, well worth seeing one of the Wonders of the World for yourself; photos alone cannot do them justice.

The Egyptian Museum

by M.E.R.V

The Egyptian Museum in Cairo has the biggest museum collection in the world! You will be lucky to get through everything in a day. With Egypt being one of the oldest civiliations in the world, the exhibits are of course, more than ancient. Ventilation was horrible in some parts and it smelt of a huge warehouse full of dusty artefacts. There is an extrance fee to enter the museum and a separate fee to get into the Mummy Room which is an absolutely must! The pungent here is literally obvious as soon as you enter - the smell of dead people...

The beauty of the Pyramids of Giza

by M.E.R.V

Most people do not know the pyramids are so close to Cairo. Well, I have to admit I didn't! These stunning wonders of the whole are breathtaking. It's amazing how they built these structures thousands of years ago. If you have enough time, find out how u can get in and climb one of the Pyramids. Watch those dodgy men in military uniform with huge machine guns guarding the Pyramids. Officially, they are there to protect these ancient structures from any vandalism and climbing the stone blocks is strictly prohibited....unless you give a tip of course! Drink plenty of water, it gets terribly hot!

Dashur

by mtn_bear

Here's the Bent Pyramid. The initial base was built at an angle of 53 degrees, which they realized half way through was too steep. The pyramid was finished at a lesser angle. Much of the original limestone facing is still intact. Quite incredible feat. The tourist police here are a hoot. Lively and animated, they'll pose for a nominal baksheesh and ham it up. There isn't much else going on this far out of the city.Save the tour guides. Hire a private driver for the day who will take you right there from Cairo for much less. Plus, you can stop along the way (watch out for the paparys 'museum', which is really a storefront for kitsch. High points along the way to Dashur include Saqqarra and Memphis.Plan at least 5-6 hours to see all 3 sites.

The Citadel of Saladin

by midnight_mike

Built by Saladin, the Kurdish sultan who liberated Jerusalem from Crusader control, the massive citadel from the 12th century is situated atop a hill overlooking Cairo. On a smog-free day, you can see the pyramids in the distance. Inside the walls of the citadel is an Ottoman-inspired mosque which was built in the same fashion as the Blue Mosque in Istanbul. Just outside the walls is a mosque built by the Mamuluk rulers. There are two museums inside the citadel. One is devoted to Egypt's police officers and the other is a military museum. Outside of the military museum is a statue of Ibrahim Pasha mounted on a horse, plus several Soviet-made planes and tanks. The admission fee is 40 Egyptian pounds. Try to avoid visiting early on weekends as it will be crowded with hundreds of school children.
