Egyptian Museum in Cairo

by ATXtraveler

During the tour of the Egyptian museum with our guide, Mohammed, I learned a very interesting fact. You can spend 8 hours a day, for 9 months, and still not see everything there is to see here. From the gold mask of King Tut, to the jars that hold the internal organs of the mummies, there are unique artifacts big and small to see. The papyrus art was unbelieveable, the huge statues of the pharoahs.... too much to describe for you here. Definitely well worth the admission price (about $5).

The Egyptian Museum of Antiquities

by Paul2001

The Egyptian Museum of Antiquities is the very first stop that you should make as you begin to explore Egypt. Everything you want to know about ancient Egypt is recorded and exhibited here make it a great introduction to ancient Egyptian culture. There apparently 100,000 artifacts on display here or hidden away in the backrooms. Some parts of the museum seem to have a warehouse feel to it with piles of sarcophagus in many galleries with little explanation. The highlights of a visit tends to be the Mummies Gallery and the Tutankhamen GalleryOverall I found the visit to be an awesome experience. If you choose to visit the museum allow yourself about half of a day to see all of the important exhibits. The Egyptian Museum of Antiquities is open from 9am to 6:45pm daily. A visit will set you back 40 Egyptian pounds.

The Egyptian Museum in Cairo was was first set up in 1835 by the Egyptian government. The present museum building (see photo) was built in 1900 in a neo-classical style by the French architect Dourgnon. The exhibited collections are huge, ranging from prehistoric findings to the Greco-Roman period. When I was in Cairo, I went there twice, because it was so much to see!!

His Royal Highness, Pharao Ramses II

by LarsLous

In the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, you can see the mummy of his Royal Majesty, Pharao Ramses the Great. This man was maybe the myghtiest king in the history of mankind. His glory was so big, even in our times he will not be forgotten. Fabulous monuments like Abu Simbel were erected, only because he wanted it so.

The treasure of Tut Anch Amon

by LarsLous

When you visit the egyptian museum, you can visit the treasures of HRH Tut Anch Amon. Everything, that was found in his grave is nowadays exposed in the museum. Unforgettable pieces of art, like his burrial mask, are exposed. Do not miss this exhibit, when coming to Cairo.

Egyptian Museum

A museum bursting with artifacts. You could spend days here exploring. I think you'll recognize the item in the pic, Tutankhamen's exhibit was one of the most crowded in the museum. The original Egyptian museum was established in 1835 by the Egyptian government. Later, a museum was built at Boulaq to house the collection of archeologist August Mariette, however the building you see now was constructed by Marcel Dourgnon in 1900, and to which the Mariette collection was moved, after having already been moved to the Giza palace of Ismail pasha. That was in 1880. One part of the museum I found absolutely fascinating was the Mummy Room. It cost extra to go in, I believe 40EGP (in 2001) and no cameras are allowed in that room. However, it was absolutely amazing to me to view the remains of people that I'd read about for years. Some people are enthralled with art museums, spending hours in...

Luxor

by solopes

Our guide told us that half of all the monuments in the world were in Luxor. We easily believed. Maybe not in quantity, but in size and expression. The temples and palaces in the east bank, and the burial places in the west bank justify that you spend in Luxor all the time that you can. And they made me create a Luxor's page to insert all tne notes and photos I had to post. You're invited!

Cruising the Nile: Houseboats vs Faluccas

by Odinnthor

I feel it is imperative to experience the faluccas, and the "closer" experience they bring. As a tour director, I loved the personal interaction with the local people, - unlike a lot of my collegues, I must say, - and on the Nile the falucca allows for much more of that. My tours were mostly five star, and often frequented by people who could have saved their money and stayed home and rented the video. They tended to be detached, - so my job as I saw it was to get through this facade and allow them to get a little dirty. Let them get close to the "kid in the mudpuddle" they used to be. So I would try to squeeze in some of that , and on the Nile, hiring faluccas, stepping ashore in unexpected places and delighting all involved, was one way of doing that. Look, sometimes things went astray, and sometimes more than a little, but then afterwards, the dinner conversation was never more...
