Nile Cruise

by solopes

A cruise in the Nile is mandatory but things will be different according to the quality of the boat that you take. We were in the Nephtys and everything worked fine. Some passengers were moved from another boat with severe complaints, but they also found Nephtys perfect. They have been really relaxing days, with isolated visits serving well to break monotony.Another aspect to have in mind is the option of going up the river or down. We did it from Aswan to Luxor, and I think it was the best option.

Birdwatching in Aswan

by janetd1xon

Enjoy the birdwathcin in Aswan with a local bird expert- whether you are a twitcher or not. there are so many birds to see and they are not frightened away by the boatsDo not buy the guides that are sold by the many vendors, but if you want one get one from your guide. the other ones sold do not have many of the local birds in them.Ibis.egrets, loads of different types of storks, little bitten, kingfishers.ducks, cormorants, geese to name a few! We even saw an Osprey.See photos

Bazaar in Aswan

by janetd1xon

Make sure that when you are in Aswan you visit the bazaar. Even if you do not want to buy anything you will find it very colourful and if you are there during the calling for prayers by the local mosque it is very atmospheric.Bartering is the key and make sure that you are not too ripped off and a lot of people do not like haggling and keep the starting prices high for everyone else! The spices are lovely in the market and you will need to decide how you carry them home so that they do not spill out in your luggage. Another cheap thing to buy is the Henna powder for dying and conditioning hair. This is the real mccoy! You can buy it pre packages rather than loose.( make sure you do not buy the hand henna unless you want it)The bazaar can be found parrallel to the main Nile side road and is easiest accessed for the first time from the railway station. It goes on for a long way so make sure...

Nile Cruise

by MikeySoft

My trip was back in April 2008, not sure what the prices are today. You can go right to the boats to check them out and book. --You should be able to arrange a Nile Cruise once in Aswan for $50US/person/night or less on a 5 star boat. All 5 stares boats are not alike so you should check the boat. Better yet, asks the boats and you should be able to get a better price. I did it in Aswan, but I think it can also be done in Luxor. Here is the phone number of Felucca Boat caption in Aswan. +20 12 81 65 238 I used him for a 1/2 day feluccas ride in Aswan. He is Nubian and seems very honest. I could see it in his eyes that I was overcharged when I told him the price I paid for a cruise boat. He can also help you with cruises to Luxor should you wish. He gave me a cheaper price for the cruise the day before, but I was hot, tired, and did not pay attention and booked with someone else later in...

Plan your trip!

by mjleynes

Don't arrange tours at the Cairo Airport Arrival! It's so expensive! It is very important to plan your trip. Have an idea of where you want to stay, where to go and where to book your tour. As much as possible pre-book everything. We plan our trip to Egypt but we thought it will be cheaper to arrange and get tours when we get to Cairo, but we thought wrong. We arrange a package tours with Delta Tours (www.deltatoursegypt.com) and thinking maybe it'll be cheaper to get tours when we get to Cairo; We cancelled our booking and that turns out to be the biggest mistake of our Egypt Trip. We stayed at Marriott Hotel near the airport and they can book tours. TAKE IT if you don't have pre-arranged booking. We didn't thinking it's cheaper with travel agency and we ended up paying almost twice the price!

NIght of stars

by kat-m

This trip takes you out to the desert, camels are waiting if you wish a ride, A very knowledgable guide will take you to a quiet spot and explain about the stars, constelations and of course the moon. After which you are then taken to large telescopes where you can view jupiter, venus and the moon along with the surrounding stars near to the planets. The guide will take a picture for you through the telescope lens. (see pic). After this the Beduin tribe who live out in the desert have been busy preparing a meal. First they give you a drink of the herbal tea , which tasted a bit like cammomile, then a smoke of the shisha pipe if you like. A beduin will show the women in thee group (not the men) how they make thier bread and give you a chance to try. A very tasty meal was provided of meat veg and potato and the freshly made bread. A display of beduin made souvineers then is on offer to buy...

snorkeling

by kat-m

A trip out to the reefs is a must whilst down at the red sea. THe reefs are teaming with fish, all shapes sizes and colours. We took a boat trip out to Tiran Island, the instructor was very good guiding all of us along the reef and making sure no-one wandered off and got lost from our party. He gave us a good talk in english, russian ,german and arabic, relating to the reefs and fish. The only thing I was concerned about is was one silly tourist stood up on top of the coral to have a picture taken. DOH!!! WE moored the boat near the island to have lunch and you could go into the sea solo and see yet more spectacular fish and coral, Tiran was only about 50 metres away and some of the party swam out and explored a small beach. Very good trip.

Shisha cafe`s

by kat-m

Out for a morning walk I took the opportunity to take pics of the cafe`s while all was quiet. At night they are very popular with locals and tourists, you can smoke a pipe if you like and the entertainment is wonderful with dancers and music to entice you in.

Saqqara

by al2401

Saqqara is a huge area that has been used as a burial ground for thousands of years although much of it sill lies beneath the desert sands. Excavations have been carried out over some two hundred years. The feature of the site is the step pyramid of Djoser, recogniseda s the world's oldest major stone structure. The pyramid, built in the 3rd Dynasty (aroaund 2630 BC), is set within a large complex. The only entrance is through the mortuary temple. A 10.5 meter wall, built of finely cut limestone and over a mile long, surrounds the complex.Saqqara can be a 1/2 day trip from Cairo passing (or not if you wish) carpet schools, or can be added to a day at Giza.

The scenery of the Nile

by al2401

There is a lot to see when travelling along the Nile River. Lush green farmland with farmers tending their crops, boats large and small - not to mention the famous temples along the way.The Nile is the life blood of Egypt providing water, and a route for trade. Local trade is still alive and well and the merchants still take their little boats to the cruise boat to sell their wares.
