Alabaster Mosque

by al2401

The mosque of Mohammed Ali Pasha is also known as the Alabaster Mosque because it was tiled on the outside with alabaster. Now only the lower level remains tiled. It was built between 1830 and 1848 on the citadel of Saladin (12th C). You may visit the mosque except during prayer. Dress for both men and women is respectful - no skimpy clothes or shorts. Women must cover their shoulders and it is polite to cover your head as well. A scarf is an essential extra when travelling in Egypt. Shoes must not be worn inside the mosque.

Fabric for perfumes

by dusica_stamenik

After the visit of Pyramids we had nice ,relaxing time in the Perfume factory. After all that warmness at the Pyramids, this cold and good smelling place was real haven:)).They were very polite and explain how are they making the perfumes, essential oils, they show us many examples of theirs collection, they even present how are they making the special designed perfume bottle(that was interesting!)...The guy who presented us their product was telling they are the oldest and the original fabric for making the essential for Dior,Chanel....but I don't think you can compare the original perfume from Dior, for example, with those essentials we sense in the fabric.Plus it was not very cheep for just small simple bottle...so it is you choice if you wanna buy or not.

Snorkeling/Diving

by dusica_stamenik

What ever you do in Egypt-DON'T MISS THIS PLEASURE!!!I only tried snorkeling,it was the first time for me and I was little afraid at the beginning because it was totally new experience, but since I tried ones I kept doing it over and over again. The Red Sea if famous by different kind of corals and fish inside. It was fantastic,I was very impressed.I had opportunity to see many of the fishes which I saw on internet before I go to Egypt, like Lion fish,Stone fish,Napoleon fish...Medusa..etc. The most important thing no mater if you are snorkeling or diving is "DON'T TOUCH JUST LOOK".There are so many different kind of spices under water you never know which one is dangerous.Even the corals can be unpleasant if they are in contact with the skin. Other wise it is magnificent ,relaxing and funny! It's like you are in some enormously big aquarium, hehe. There are many snorkeling and diving clubs...

Bedouins

by dusica_stamenik

Explaining the Bedouin life and culture is really difficult They are an ancient people, with ancient customs and traditions, who these days are often subjected to a modern and changing world. Some Bedouins have become completely modern, with modern trappings such as cell phones and color TVs, perhaps most influenced by the Egyptian tourism trade and by various government policies. Though how they dress depends on the weather and on personal taste, the Bedouin dresses for the desert, his layered and flowing robes absorbing the sun's hot rays while allowing cooling breezes to circulate. He winds a cloth around his head and neck to retard moisture loss that can lead to heat stroke and to shield his face against the harsh, dry sand. Women wear black dresses and head covers embroidered in tiny cross-stitch designs: blue for unmarried women, red for married. They cover their faces with a veil...

Egyptian activities

by DEY

It is good to have free time to enjoy yourself and soak it all in. I lived in Cairo for 2 years and that wasn't enough! As touristy as it is, I loved going to the bazar Khan-a-Khalili. The spice market is great! There are some great side streets where you can get great photos. I normally didn't go on a Friday though. Times when things open can be iffy. Make sure to go saling on the Nile at sunset either in Cairo or Luxor. I can't remember the name, but there is an outdoor restaurant on a back street in Alexandria with great fish dishes. I'll try to remember the name.If you are interested in horse riding by the pyramids, I leased a horse for 2 years from MG Stables. I much prefer horses to the camels! Picture are included in my Cairo page.Have a great trip! I would love to visit again!

Pyramids in Cairo

by dusica_stamenik

You can not go in Egypt and not visit the symbol of theirs civilization - PYRAMIDS! My suggestion is to choose local travel agency for every trip you take through the beauties of Egypt, including this one , because they are much cheaper and you can always negotiate for better price :)).They are also very safe so don't worry that something will go wrong if you didn't choose to go with your travel agency.Who can explain the real Egypt better than the local people? The most popular places for Staying in Egypt are Hurgada and Sharm El Shaikh. Both of them are nearly on the same distance from the Pyramids,so prepare to travel around 6 hours by bus.Usually the start of this tour is in the middle of night, the buses are acclimatized,so you will arrive in Cairo in the morning. This tour through Cairo includes city tour by bus, visit of the famous Museum of Tutankhamen(the museum really fascinate...

Viewing of the Pyramids

by travellingtechie

The Giza Plateau housing the Pyramids is practically within the Cairo city limits now. There is a Pizza Hut just outside the complex where one can have some meals. Also it is a good idea to get to Giza early in the morning to avoid the traffic rush but the Pyramids may not be fully visible at that time of the day if there is a bit of haze hanging around. We reached the Pyramids at around 8.30 am and could not get a decent view till 9.15 when the sun got into effect and the haze settled. This is the time when the tourist buses also start to arrive. We were advised to avoid the camel runners as they can be pretty hassling and we did just that. So be aware that there will be quite a lot of hassling from them. We had been to Egypt in December 2009-January 2010 and it used to get pretty warm in the afternoon even in those months.
