If you are going to be around an obvious tourist place such as the pyramids you will most likely be hounded by touts. Especially if you look like an obvious tourist.

If you are not interested in any of their services its better to not even make eye contact. Just keep walking. If they insist say La Shukran (No, thank you) ... Believe me if you stop and talk sometimes its not easy to get yourself out of it. Particularly if you are not used to this.

Go to the Pyramid Page for more information!

  • Local Merchants - Egypt
    Local Merchants
    by Cynthia_marie
Be aware that when shopping at local markets within Egypt, that the locals will overprice everything. Don't be in a rush to pay these prices. Be prepared to walk away if they don't lower the price. You will be surprised at how quickly they change their minds.

Let the local merchants know that you have shopped around and you are aware of prices elsewhere (for the same item you are after). Souvenirs, etc are basically the same price everywhere. A large beach towel with "Egypt" written on it can be purchased for 30 Egyptian Pounds. Don't pay anymore. Some places were charging 60-70 Egyptian pounds.

If you find the local merchants a bit aggressive, just walk away. In Cairo, it was evening when I walked around the markets, and it was overwhelming for me. They will try and convince you to just "take a peek" inside their shops.

In this photo, this man is putting layers of sand into a glass jar. A great souvenir of Egypt !!! You can buy these for approx. 5-10 Egyptian Pounds. (That's approx. one Euro) It is even interesting just to stand and watch these being made.

On our tour in Cairo, a man brought us to the Papyrus museum, they told us it would be nice and its worth it, so we agreed to to there.

The Papyrus museum is a small atore that of a boutique . They show you how they make Papyrus and whats it made from. You'll see different Papyrus around the room and that's it!

Once your done, they will tell you to but their Papyrus for a very expensive price. Some will insist, but we got away with out buying one. (You can simply but one outside for 3-5$)

Don't go here, its a waste of your time, but some people who are curious to see how they make Papyrus art may go here, "DON'T BUT THE PAPYRUS THEY SELL YOU!"

If your planning to go here, "DON'T BUT THE PAPYRUS THEY SELL YOU!" It is over price! Simply tell them NO! It will work, dont fall for their charm! (That's what we did!)

Go to Khaka Elli, you will see alot of Papyrus for sale for a cheap price of 3-5$. But dont forget to haggle the price down!

Reading and hearing the papyrus history will encourage you to buy one in Egypt. Dont be cheated. The papyrus offered by the street vendors usually the fake ones, made from the banana leaves. Get the original one from the papyrus institute; they use to demonstrate the papyrus making process to the visitors. The oil painted papyrus will be more expensive. The popular displays on papyrus will be The After Life, The Ancient Calendar, King Tut, Queen Nefertiti, and King Ramses II.

The prices are so diffrent...Dollars or EG. Pounds ?

Check with others the prices for the taxy.. You can have to pay 6 times to much if you " dont know". The taxidrivers are so nice... but they can try to shout and scream if they dont get the pay they whant.. Dont bother to much about this. This is just " theyr way " of doing it. Give them the price, and a litle bit more. Go out of the taxi and give them a smile. They are allowed to have a try on naive tourists.. yes... ?...No ?......But pay with EG pounds. !!!!!!!

    Walk.....Bus........

The wine and spirits in Egypt tastes very different.... and..........You can get a really bad head drinking to mutch... Only one drink can give you trouble....

You are allowed to buy 6 bottles with you coming to Egypt... Do this if you have the money. Good spirits is hard to get, and you can also use it like money....You are only allowed to by spirits at the taxfree 24 hours after coming to the country, so this is probably one of the first thing to do.

    Dont drink !

Don't listen to your guide .....and don't jump on the first camel when you arrive to Giza.

There is a alley way accross the street....walk over.....pay 1/5 of the price.

Around the pyramid they will make you believe that 200 LE is an awesome price for a 15 minute camel ride.....(they will start at 300 LE).

Accross the street you can rent a camel for 40 LE - and ride for 2 hrs :))))

Luxor- it's NOT the Luxor you
    Dream of!
    by matt10gonzalez
Ah...Luxor! Home of a dozen of ruins and a thousand ancient years old artifacts!
And also home to Egypt's biggest scam city!
Okay, hassles and scams are everywhere in Egypt but it just seems to be much more (and worse) in Luxor!
We got scammed, overpriced and hassled the MOST in Luxor. (Boy, does it drive you crazy!)
BE CAREFUL! This is where your patience and temper will be tested!
And here we met some interesting people!

    MOST OBNOXIOUS PEOPLE OF EGYPT:

1.) The Horse Carriage Driver- He was hassling and scary. (Honestly! He look like a dirty old man!) We negotiated to ride with him and we thought he would take as along the boulevard, you know? For a little romantic spin with the horse. Well, we were wrong! He took us far away out of town to the bazaars! And he kept screaming that this bazaar, was the boulevard!
    Wow! What a far cry!
Then he wanted instead of $6, $10!
Well, mom just screamed at him and we paid $6! Imagine? We paid him $6 and we had to walk (a far 1+ hr walk at night) our way back to our destination and he still wanted more?
Mom wanted to throw the money at his face! (But she didn't. Good mom!)

2.) This boy, in the Valley of the queens, was selling mom a porcelain mymmy for 20 LE. (4 dollars) Cheap! Mom said yes and gave him 20 LE. And you know what? The boy looked shocked! He then said, 20 british pounds!
What? Mom said forget it and both kept arguing! (loudly) In the end, he gave it for 20 LE! I think mom felt like choking the boy!

3.) And finally, the PITS- the horse carriage who sput on mom and brother.
When mom was just strolling by and said "No." (politely) when asked if she wants to ride a horse carriage (another one), well, you know what the guy did?
    He SPUT on mom!
    No kidding!
It's a good thing his saliva feel on my brother instead of mom! Boy! My brother screamed "Que Asco! (how disgusting!)" and he washed it many times!
Good thing it just fell on my brother! Because if it fell on my angry mom, she said she would SCREAM and report him to the tourist police for rudeness!

Now after you read that, I hope you'll prepare that this city can really test your patience and temper. (We found it more hassling and dustier than Cairo.)

    Like what my dad says:
DAD: "It's a sin city. A lot of the people's values here are all screwed up!"

    BUT!

Don't ditch Luxor because of this! Luxor IS truly a beautiful city!
The ruins are unforgettable: A trip to Egypt without Luxor sucks. (You won't get to appreciate the thousand year old temples.) And plus, there are other ways to remedy the problem succesfully:

1.) Relax in the Winter Palace, an oasis in the middle of chaos!
2.) Stroll down the boulevard, ignore horse carriages.
3.) Get a hotel to arrange the horse carriage for you! (Even if it costs more!)
    4.) Take a nap!
5.) Take a fascinating sound and light tour to the Karnak temple, simply more amazing at night!
6.) Don't stroll through the bazaars (here) if you don't want to be hassled! Simple! (But you won't also see the real Luxor.)

If you really can't stand Luxor, you can skip it by taking a train to Aswan or a Nile Cruise! Yes, the Nile Cruise is the best remedy- you get to stroll through Luxor with comfort and a breeze!
But you won't see the adventure of it!

    BUT!
Despite being hassled the MOST in Luxor, believe it or not,
Mom and dad, STILL DREAM to go back to Luxor! (Not on a cruise!)

MOM- "I wanna go back there, just stay at a nice budget hotel and just relax at the Winter Palace and visit all the tombs!"
DAD- "I wanna go back to Luxor, it's chaotic but very fun and interesting."

See? Luxor- it may NOT the Luxor you dream of!
But once you learn to handle it,
It WILL be the Luxor you dream of!

When you come there is a lot of " helpers ".. They all want to help you with your luggage...
    And you get happy.....

When they have " helped" you... They want of course some money.. If you have dollar thats good !

Just look for another luggage....and slowly move against yours without looking at it.. Then when you reath out for the " nabors" take your own very quick and hold on to it.
