Wine

by gabriellefox

If you enjoy a good glass of wine either purchase it in Duty Free before coming to Egypt or buy it from Duty Free on the Israeli border. Egyptian wine is expensive and very dissapointing. Egyptian Beer on the other hand is pretty good.

You HAVE to haggle!

by groovy_23

While in egypt and especially in the "souks" (markets) men will approach you and try to get you to come into their shop to look at something to buy. They will always say, "come look! No hassle! very cheap!"etc. DONT BUY ANYTHING FROM THESE GUYS WITHOUT HAGGLING THE PRICE!!! (see below) If you see something you like, don't look too interested. If you ask them how much, keep in mind that NO ONE will give you a good price at first. The initial price will always be grossly inflated. If they tell you something is 300 EGP then look at them as if they are crazy and walk away. They will chase you. When they give you a second price, keep walking. They will usually then tell you that they want to give you a deal so name your price. As a rule of thumb you need to take whatever price they initially give you, cut it in half and subtract a little. So on 300, a good price would be about 120. But dont...

Pyramids, of course!

by ollyf

The pyramids will be swarming with tourists, with hawkers sticking to them like leeches every step of the way. You'll be put on a human conveyor belt if you want to go inside. You won't get a moment to yourself to enjoy the spectacle, because the second you stop walking to take a picture or just appreciate the view, you'll be harassed. BUT the pyramids ARE amazing and it's a genuine privilege to see them up close.

Be prepare!

by M.E.R.V

Be prepare by the influx of Egyptian "businessmen" coming your way once you are out in major tourist spots! If you are thinking of buying some souvenirs, make sure your a good bargainer. Always offer 1/3 of what the price they have quoted. They may not be too happy but with all that competition around they will actually eventually give in! Some cheeky ones say it is free to ride on the camels, but hunnie...good luck coming down if you dont give a tip. So ask if they charge for letting you down. The 'businessmen' accept any major currencies including the Cypriot pound!

shops!

by gingspanna

On our way to Valley of the Kings the coach stopped off at a souveniers shop! As soon as i started looking at things the shop owner was on to me straight away and picked up everything i looked at! He said I could buy these three things for about 500 egyption pounds(£50 i think thats right) , i had no intention of spending that sort of money and i only had 100 on me! so I said i'll have just the one thing because i felt bad, so he said '200 egyption pounds for this piece' I said 'No 100, thats all i have' anyway he ended up getting angry so i walked out of the shop and was stopped by more people trying to sell me things for a lot cheaper, the guy saw this so i walked fast onto the coach, he followed me and said 'fine you have for 100' so i went back in the shop ON MY OWN (never do that) but it was ok, he just grabbed the souvenier statue wrapped it in some newspaper and shoved it in my...

No matter what they say- you DON'T have to do it

by cyprus4holidays

A First Time Visit to the Pyramids without a tour operator or tour guide. You will no doubt be accosted by one of the "local guides" and told you can only visit the Pyramids on horseback or by camel. This is NOT the case at all. You can just buy a ticket and walk inside the enclosure. Make sure you wear long trousers - as you will end up being bitten by the flies etc that constantly hover around the horses and/or camels. At least if you do get sucked in - it's a great experience but you will end up very sore if you take the camel trip. They are not the most comfortable of animals to sit on for any length of time! Too hot for you to visit the Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Boat Museum? Here's a tip for you.....Stand facing the Sphinx then look directly behind you. What do you see???Pizza Hut and KFC!!!A great place to have a cold drink, a bite to eat and gaze on one of the Seven Wonders of...

Charming ( - _ - )

by Beograd

Ldies, be careful! Egyptian men are very charming and rather handsome. Do not fall for their charms! Remember, Hurghada is a touristic place and all they want is just fun! Nothing more... Unless that's what you want, too :-) Please, do not act like a dog that's set free from a leesh after a long time. Remember you represent your country and culture in this country Try to be polite and keep a distance Take the most of it!

Just say No

by TheWanderingCamel

If you are going to be around an obvious tourist place such as the pyramids you will most likely be hounded by touts. Especially if you look like an obvious tourist. If you are not interested in any of their services its better to not even make eye contact. Just keep walking. If they insist say La Shukran (No, thank you) ... Believe me if you stop and talk sometimes its not easy to get yourself out of it. Particularly if you are not used to this.Go to the Pyramid Page for more information!-----------------------------Posted by Khadi

Local Travel Agency Scams

by Gorkhali

Hi:We just back from a 12 day trip to Egypt (Cairo, Aswan, Luxor, Hurghada, Alexandria) and to say the least it was interesting.Based on several other readers reviews we decided to go with a local travel agency – DeCastro tours, for the “pacakage tour”. Trust me you are better of paying few extra dollars to go with a US/international travel agency like Travco, Thomas Cook or Adventures travels. Having traveled extensively (for both business or pleasure) we can tell when we are being scammed and this was one of those trips. Here are few items you should be aware of:- The agency promised us a 5 star accommodations. When we arrived they told us that the hotels were booked and had booked us at similar facilities. The similar facilities were 3 or 4 stars. - The same happened with our Nile cruise. We absolutely refused to check in on the boat and had to wait on the side walk for six hours,...

Shopping stops - graciously provided by your guide

by Homanded

Any vendor, or "obligatory" shopping stop graciously thrown in as part of your tour experience by the tour operator are actually part of a larger group of people working together. Each tour operator seems to have his/her own prefered shop keeper, often times being a friend or relative of theirs. Here's how it works:You'll be out accompanied by your tour guide, happily snapping away and lost to the beauty of the temples and monuments. When it finally comes time to move to the next sight, you'll tour operator will announce a "Pit stop" or bathroom break or, a visit to an Alabaster factory, Carpet factory, Papyrus factory, perfume factory..etc.All the while, the guide becomes quite energetic about how lucky you will be to actually get to see this "hidden" part of Egyptian culture! He/She will repeatedly make reference to you not being obligated to purchase anything, something which will prove...
