NOTHING is free!

by gypsysoul73

Oh wow I could kick myself for being so gullible lol. When someone tells you " You have beaytiful eyes! Here, this for you, FREE! No pay, no cost. Free for you!" DO NOT believe them. Peddlers have a bad habit of pretending to "give" you some of their wares like shirts, souvenirs, postcards etc. telling you they're free. I tried to stop them , but they're persistent. Persistent is an understatement actually. They are downright forceful! Anyway, I fell for this when I was touring the Pyramids on my first day. Sure, they may not charge you for it, but they will force you to give them 'baksheesh' or a tip and you end up paying much much more than what it would have cost if you just bought it off them. If you have no intentions of buying something and do not want to be hassled, the best thing to do is to just ignore them. It feels rude, but I found it's the only thing that works. If you make...

Buyer beware

by noprobleminafrica

Some hotels have staff members who watch for tourists returning with purchases from the markets or shops. They ask you if a driver or guide took you, and then tell you how you've been ripped off because the driver got a commission on your purchases. This is usually true. But then they will convince you to return everything you bought and go to a store they recommend where no commission is charged. You MAY get things a little cheaper, but don't be fooled- this satff member will also get a commission. My advice is that if you have a driver or guide that you are happy with, let them get the commission, and save the hassle of returning and repurchasing items just so a less than honest hotel staffer can get some extra cash! Commissions are a fact of life in Egypt.....it's just a matter of who gets it.

Ask for price before ordering

by suku93

Always ask for price before ordering anything, even for a can of coke! Whether by appearance or behaviour, tourists stick out like a sore thumb wherever they go, especially if its your first time, and so what you get are touristy prices! One guy at a cafe asked me to pay 20 Egyptian pounds for a can of coke - fair price is about 3-5 pounds!

Unscrupulous Apartment Brokers

by Magda196

Rania, the broker I found online, offered to arrange a luxury car to meet me at the airport in addition to an apartment for 500 USD (high season). The driver was Rania’s father, the car a tiny box. She also promised, if for any reason I was dissatisfied with the first place, she would have several others in my price range. However, immediately upon meeting Rania she told me that the promised apartment had been rented the day before. I was disappointed, but decided to roll with it and agreed to see the others available. Turns out she only had 3 apartments to show me and they were priced between 1,000-1,500 USD. I knew I was being scammed. I was exhausted having been up for more than 24 hours and was losing patience. I told Rania I would not look at another apartment beyond my set price range. I pointed out that she knew I was arriving in “high-season” and never once did she voice concern...

Hard-sell

by Enzyme_X

When visiting toursits siets you will surely run into all kinds of souvenir sellers and other that want to get some money from naive toursits. They are all very persisten and just don't accept ''no''. They are full of tricks. Never believe someone who sais that he just wants to give you a free gift. You want get rid of him. By accepting his gift you are oblight to buy some other stuff. There are also some guys that want money if you take pictures of/with them. We belived one that said, it's free. He wrapped a scarf orund my friend head to look like locals. After a foto-shoot he demanded money, not for taking pictures with him, but for scarf ''rental''.This are few trick that you learn first days in Egypt. It's the school you have to go through. After that you know the rules of the game and nobody can fool you again.

Queen Hatshepsut... really ?

by Muya

Temples and tourist attractions are full of people who will kindly give you some explanation, or simply lead you to some hidden place to show you something "incredible"... In our case, we were lucky enough to discover this so-called statue of Hatshepsut, next to which we had to perform a series of gesture that will bring us luck... I'm not sure for Queen Hatshepsut, but at least it was funny. Well, if you decide to follow an improvised guide like this, be sure to know you'll have to give him some bakshish :-)And very often, coins won't be enough... so its better to say no directly, rather than arguing afterwards .

Its a minefield when souvineer shopping

by crewsada

Where to begin........dont get the first price for an item you want to buy. Shop around, haggle it down, check for the quality and ask from someone you trust what to buy. Dont be taken in by someone who appears friendly, if you are not interested then keep walking dont get distracted. Sounds very harsh, but if you are there after a few days you'll understand. To stop and speak to everyone who is friendly to you would take all day and night. Be nice and polite, but firm as you want to give a good, lasting impression of yourself and your country etc. Getting aggressive with a shop vendor is not going to get anywhere although sometimes you have to watch when occassionally they can invade your personal space, so look out for that. Dont walk through the market if you have no intension to buy as browsing is made very difficult by some of the vendors

Egyptian salespeople

by andronikkie

Egyptians are a very friendly and sociable people. They tend to chat you up at no time and they unfortunately have one aim in mind: to relieve you of some or all of your money. Never follow a stranger, no matter what they say into shops, back-rooms or basements. In general don't open conversations with Egyptians in the street. Be firm and polite and brush them off. I would also suggest that you don't buy things off the street unless you know well what price to expect. I read about many scams in this website and some travel books. Some people in my tour group also experienced hassle and cheating, especially in Cairo. In Giza a fellow traveller bought an arabic head scarf for 20$ from someone in front of the pyramids. Even police are corrupt. In Dahsur, we were walking around a pyramid with my husband when a policeman mounting a camel started following us (he was supposed to be guarding...

'Touts' will attempt to make conversation with you with the intention of persuading you to sign their visitors books....a ploy to entice you into their shops etc. Best not to enter into conversation or make promises to return, they will remember you and their demands become stern.

Best friends...

by Lorenzo1971

During your stay in Egypt you will find many people trying to help you in many ways. Unfortunately what we found is that most times they are not entirely genuine. We were approached by a multitude of different people. Most of the times it appears as if they just want to have a chat with you and they present themselves as teachers, students, or other respectable professions. After a brief chat they offer to help you: show you some place, teach you some Arabic, buy you a drink,... They seem very honest people and even if you have the nagging doubt "what on earth does he want from me?" you do not dare to ask him because he is so polite with you. However after he has spent a long time with you (usually taking you where he wants: maybe a bazar or a papyrus shop) he will finally explain that he has a large family or some sick relative and that he needs money The good thing is that after a few...
