Flying into Egypt

by aadil

From Mumbai to Cairo by Egypt Air was a little less than $500 for a return flight. Yemenia offers cheaper flights but they are via two halts in Sanaa and another small city. Try the internet for the cheapest options. We booked ours online and got the best deals.

Sleeping Train from Cairo to Luxor or Aswan

by gallivanting1

We booked a berth on the Sleeping Train from Cairo to Luxor and while we got a bed, the train itself wasn't worth the price over the sleeping seats they offer on the regular train. The sleeping train includes breakfast in the price. We found ourselves in two compartments with another gentleman. My husband shared the room with him and I shared the room with the two boys (aged 9 and 10). I was hassled repeatedly because I did not pay for the 2nd boy as there was no bed for him and they said the train was full. Eventually, the porter ceded and it went no further. He got us an extra blanket and one of the boys slept on the floor of the room. Now that we got all of that worked out, it was just a matter of getting some sleep and I swear the engineer was a rookie because every stop we made we were jerked awake but either the sudden acceleration or slamming on the brakes. You never knew which...

Cruising the Nile

by gallivanting1

Booking a cruise ship is quite easy - just walk into any travel agency in Cairo. There are literally hundreds of ships that ply the Nile and they range from 3 star to 5 star - by Egyptian standards. The main point here is that you get what you pay for so barter hard. Things to remember are:- ships travel from either Luxor to Aswan or from Aswan to Luxor- your entrance fees are NOT included in the price of your trip- you may stay on the ship for more nights but might find yourself moored to the pier for a couple of nights.- they will always tell you that the ships are booked up and that it may be hard to get you a room on a ship - not true but a great bartering trick they like to use. Counter that will an "Oh well, it didn't really matter is we went or not" and they should come around. We took the sleeping train (more on that in another tip) instead of the 1st class sleeping seat they...

The Sleeping Trains in Egypt

by travellingtechie

The sleeping trains in Egypt are run by a copany called Abela. One can get the reservation in Cairo at the Ramses Train station. Their office is adjacent to the Travel Information Center near the entrance to the train station. Most of the passengers on these trains are foreigners. They accept only dollars, British pounds or Euros for payment. We asked them to take the payment in EGP as we had converted the amount for train travel as well and got a stern no. And they dont accept any foreign currency coins as well. So when we were supposed to pay 82 euros we paid 80 euros in notes and 17 EGP to substitute the 2 euros. The compartments are pretty nice and comfortable. Dinner and breakfast is served on the train. But coffe or tea is not included in the dinner while it is included in the breakfast. The journey is a comfortable one and if you are planning to avoid a night's stay in a hotel and...

Giza pyramids

by poupeeAztec

Well getting to the Giza pyramids was quite interesting and a true test of patience. It is very easy to take the metro to Giza. But once there you have to take a bus and this is when it gets quite interesting. From there we took a bus (I don't remember the number, but it took us a while to figure it out). People at the station would offer to drive you to Giza. The bus fare was 1EP.

Airport to Cairo central

by poupeeAztec

If you feel adventurous enough there is a bus that goes from the airport and drops you off near the Egyptian museum. It is a bit confusing I must admit, but you need to know the names in arabic and ask people around. It is not organized by Western standards, difficult to figure out where to wait for the bus or where to buy ticket. Just ask and you pay for the bus fare inside bus. It should be 2EP for you and 1EP for your luggage. It is best to carry the exact change. Bus 356 and 27 should take you near the Egyptian Museum. It is very practical if you are staying anywhere around the Midan Talaat Harb square or along the long avenue of Talaat Harb. From the bus stop it is about 15 minutes walk depending where on the avenue you happen to stay.

Metro in Cairo

by poupeeAztec

Try to use the metro in Cairo. It is only 1EP each way and easy to understand. It is not very extensive like the metros in Paris or London, but it goes easily get you to several place in Cairo, including the Giza pyramids (after taking a bus), Egyptian museum, and Coptic area. There is also a wagon just for women.Example: Egyptian museum exit Nasser, Giza Pyramids exit Giza, Ramses Train station exit Mubara (Midan Ramses).

BEWARE

by lifepro

The transfer out of Cairo International Airport is like an organized crime. Yes you can get shuttle from the hotel if you pay as much as one night's stay. You can try internet and find the most frudalent sites. For exmple check this out but never use : WWW.CAIROTAXI.COMI was in Egypt 4 times and wil be 5th in a few weeks. I still worry about the transfer.

Al Nozha Airport You gate way to Alexanderia

by Doctor38

AL Nozha Airport is very close to the city and unlike the Borg Al Arab Airport you'll get there in a hurry. Don't expect any free duty shopping, Just friendly people. As soon as you get out of the Airport you come across taxis who will ask you 40 LE for a short trip just leave them and walk 200 m to the main road where you'll find much cheaper cars for less than 10 LE.

Alexanderia, Tram

by Doctor38

I love the tram. It is old, slow and crowded but still very functional and will cover a good part of ALexanderia. I think it will coast you .75 LE. It is a must see and use when you visit the city
