Egyptian Taxi

by Brynston

hire a taxi for the day, we went to all the tourist attractions like valley of the kings etc and our taxi driver waited outside until we had finished and then took us back. this also prevented the locals coming over to us and harrassing us which is quite common when out and about in luxor. we had the same taxi man for the whole week, very reliable and very cheap.. we tipped £10 at the end of the week and he said that would feed his family for a week. we got the hotel to organise us a taxi from a reputable company.

Be sure you have transport back to Cairo

by sojourner2008

If doing Egypt independently, Abela sleeper trains are a nice option for going to Luxor and Aswan and are easily available up to the same day you are leaving Cairo, but if you think you can come back to Cairo on Abela, think again. Even attempting to book many days in advance at either Luxor or Aswan stations results in no service as the attitudes are very most negative. Be advised about trying out independent Egypt travel, especially if you are alone. There is no respect nor courtesies. It's impossible that the tourist only trains are full, especially 4 days in advance as there are so few tourists in Egypt (and historically now is the beginning of the high season) as you rarely see tourists walking around in the markets and streets. There are tourists, but they are on the Nile cruise tour packages so the big boats are their mode of transport as well as their food, entertainment, and...

Let the train take the strain. But take a picnic.

by stewarth99

Your trip on the night train should be exciting. When my wife and I tavelled to Cairo from Luxor and back it was an experience - not to be repeated. The Luxor-Cairo-Luxor trip was using a locals ticket costing £E900, I think. first part to Cairo in a 1st class carriage no recliners, just ordinary railway seats. We got woken up during the night so that a policeman could check our passports - nice policeman, but did he have to bang on the doorway (no door, 1/2 curtain) quite so hard to wake us!The return trip was in a tourist 'sleeper' carriage. Individual reclining chairs that swivel somewhat. Same wake up call for passport checks. Arrived at Luxor around 0600 where the taxi driver thought to take us the long route, not on my watch!Under no circumstance buy any food or drink at the station or on the train. It's poor quality and very expensive. Think British Rail in the 60's.Other than...

Cairo Metro

by jimbolta

Don't be afraid to use the metro. It is unbelievably cheap and is quite good fun. There are no manners when it comes to boarding, you just have to push your way on. Don't be afraid to do this as you will miss the train if you don't.You may get stared at a bit but this is only because not many tourists use the service. Also, be aware what carriage you are boarding, especially if you are a male/s without female company.

Sharm Bus Station to Airport

by graeme83

When I arrived at Sharm Bus Station myself and another passenger shared a taxi to the airport for 30LE in total. Originally he asked for something like 100LE. There are a lot of taxi drivers there to greet an incoming bus.

Bus Taba to Cairo

by graeme83

If coming from the Israel border there is a bus station 200m south of the border on the left hand side of the road. The buses to Cairo leave at 10:30am, 12:30pm and 4:30pm and it costs around 70LE. This bus ride will vary in time depending on how often check points decide to board the bus and inspect documents. My journey took around six hours. There was only one toilet break en-route.

Bus Dahab to Taba

by graeme83

I arranged this minibus through my hostel, which was a mistake. The minibus is not very comfortable and very cramped compared to the East Delta Bus. Transport time is just over 2 hours. The minibus left the hostel at 10am, but with other pick-ups and admin it did not leave Dahab City until 1045 - after the East Delta service at 1030. The minibus cost me 30LE, compared to the bus price of 22LE.

Train Cairo to Aswan

by graeme83

Every night there are two tourist sleeper trains to Aswan. They both leave within 20minutes of each other. The sleeper cabins are the best that I have ever come across on a train. An airline-style evening meal and breakfast are included in the price (but not drinks). There is also a lounge car to buy alcoholic drinks etc. but is rather expensive. Passengers travelling alone who don't opt for a single-berth compartment will be booked into a 2-berth compartment with another, random traveller of the same sex. They booked me in to a cabin with a member of the opposite sex, so I got a free upgrade to a private cabin - lucky me!Prices are currently 60USD each one way from Cairo to Aswan. All tickets must be paid for in pristine US Dollars. Tickets can be bought directly at Rameses Station in Cairo at the sleeper ticket office. However, the train is currently departing from GIZA station - a...

Bus Taba to Nuwebia

by graeme83

Buses leave from Taba Bus Station (near the port entrance) to Nuwebia three times a day en-route to Sharm el-Sheikh. They leave at 7am, 9am and 3pm. The cost should be around 11LE to Nuwebia. The bus itself is relatively comfortable as the journey time is just over one hour. The camp I was staying at was about 5km north of Nuwebia. For some baksheeh the driver should pull over where you want him to stop.

Bus Nuwebia to Dahab

by graeme83

Buses leave from Nuwebia Bus Station (near the port entrance) to Dahab three times a day. They leave just after the following hours 8am, 10am and 4pm. The cost should be around 11LE. The camp I was staying at was about 5km north of Nuwebia, so I flagged the bus down from the side of the road.
