Train Cairo to Alexandria

by graeme83

Between Alexandria and Cairo I can recommend the train. There is approx one every hour during the day. The journey time ranges between 2-3 hours depending on the service and number of stops. The carraiges on this route are well kept and the seats comfortable. I got my tickets a few minutes before each journey without any problems. However, if you need to book a particular time it is always best to buy in advance. The approx cost of the train in 2nd class is E£30. The train leaves from Ramses Station and stops at both the main train stations in Alexandria.

Bus Aswan to Luxor

by graeme83

Due to logistical problems in taking public transport I took a tourist bus from Aswan to Luxor organised by my hotel. The bus travelled in a convoy leaving early morning (approx 7am) . On the way we stopped at the sites of Kom Ombo and Edfu for about 1 hour each. Again although the bus that I took was not very comfortable, it was again relatively cheap at 60LE (entrance prices not included in this price). Arrival in Luxor was at about 1pm.

Bus Aswan to Abu Simbel

by graeme83

In order to get to Abu Simbel I took a tourist bus from my hotel. All the tourist buses travel in one of two convoys a day - one leaving at 4am and another at 11am. My bus was in the first convoy taking about 3 hours to reach Abu Simbel. Following this journey I had 2 hours to wander around the site, which is not very large. After this 2 hour stop the journey back began. The bus I was on had stops on the way back at the High Dam, Unfinished Obelisk and the Temple of Phillae. Although the bus that I took was not very comfortable, it was relatively cheap at 60LE for full day transport (entrance prices not included in this price).

Bus Luxor to Dahab

by graeme83

There is a bus every evening at 5pm from Luxor to Dahab. It leaves from the bus station, which is past the airport. I turned up at the bus station about an hour early to buy my ticket. In retrospect I probably would have booked it in advance. I got my ticket, but the bus was totally full on leaving. It took 17 hours to reach Dahab, via Sharm (16 hours) and Hurgada, although this will depend on how long road checkpoints on the way take. The cost was 120LE.

Flying around Egypt Inexpensively

by NilePrincess

With Egyptair's e-ticketing debut in January of '07, foreigners can now save time and money by flying, often for less than the sleeper train on certain routes. To get the best prices, do the following:1) When you go to www.egyptair.com, put 'EGYPT' as your home country. The prices are usually half the ones quoted for the US or UK. Prices are quoted in LE (Egyptian pound) but can be converted on the screen. Your card will be charged in your local currency. This only works for internal flights. For international flights, it doesn't matter what you put as your home country.2) Try a few different dates and times. Even different departure times on the same day can often vary greatly in price due to seat availability or the popularity of that particular time slot. I have paid between $25 and $32 to fly from Cairo to Luxor one way. The sleeper train is $65.3) If you're purchasing more than one...

Cairo Metro

by Doctor38

Very efficient and good way to travel around Cairo. When you want to visit the Pyramid's, you can used the metro to get to Al Geza Suburb station where you can take a taxi from the station to the Pyramids. The Metro could be very crowded but it is safe and cheap ( 1 LE ). There are new lines in the work and current ones are expanding to include new destination . There are 2 women only wagons, the rest are for every body. The least crowded wagon are the first one which is NOT a female only wagon. The Metro does not serve the airport yet but the new line that suppose to connect the eastern side of cairo to the west will serve the airport insha Allah in the future.

Nile River Cruise

by Jim_Eliason

One of the best ways to see the geographically diverse monuments of Egypt is a Nile River Cruise. These boats usually travel from Luxor to Aswan or vice versa. It's a great way to see the countryside and all lodging, meals and excursions are covered while on the cruise.

Train between Cairo and Luxor

by MikeySoft

I've took the train between Cairo and Luxor. I took first class and I did not have a compartment. I was able to sleep in the seat but it was a tiring trip. There are super deluxe tourist sleepers but I understand they are somewhat expensive. Someone told me that air flights are similar when you book the flight in advance. Maybe you should look into this so you don't have to worry about train tickets. http://www.egyptair.com.eg/english/EgyptAs far as first class train tickets. I got the tickets from Cairo to Aswan on the day of the trip. I tried to get tickets from Luxor to Cairo a few days early but was told by the station they were all sold out. A travel hustler said he could get me a ticket on the black market but I would have to pay more. Someone else said they usually always have tickets in the morning before the trip. This is because travel agents and hustlers hold on to tickets but...

Boarding the Abela Overnight train

by MikeBird

We were advised to board the train at Giza station rather than the main Cairo station called Ramses. I think this was very good advice as there were only the two platforms at Giza - Ramses has many.We were unsure which end of the platform to stand on and because it was a very long train we wanted to be sure we had boarded in the correct place. Very conveniently the stationplatform had numbers that showed where the carriages would be positioned and as we had our tickets showing carriage and berth number we were able to get in the right place for when the train finally arrived. The photo comes from the Abela website.
