From wind and waves

by isolina_it

Feluccas fill up the rivers, either with tourists or fishermen. Considering the amount of motorboats that increase the river pollution, feluccas are a better way to feel responsible to the nature around. We had a ride to go from one side to the other of the nile and visit Kitchener Island. On the way back the lack of wind forced the locals to take the oars and use their last resources of the day before starting eating again for the Ramadan break fast.

Wild taxis

by isolina_it

Taxis in Cairo are spread out all over the places, and they are commonly used They make their wild way horning in the most remote or narrow or crowdy streets, nothing can stop them.Common and good Tips for tourists: negotiate the fee before getting on, and make sure that when you agree/mimic on 20, is egyptian pounds and not uk pounds or dollars.20 egyptian pounds is a reasonable amount to go from one side of the city to the other one.The funniest time was the one when the driver had no idea where our hotel was, and he kept on driving and asking to the other drivers and passing them our map to see if they could read it. He made it! And he didn`t lose his patience even though his Ramadan break fast was starting! So we thought he deserved 1 more US DOLLAR. Big smile from a happy and tired hungry man.

Ferry from Hurghada to Sharm

by MikeySoft

I was in Dahab Sinai during April 2008. I wanted to take the ferry from Sharm to Hurghada. Hotels and tour companies in Dahab are happy to help arrange this. However, I was told by several people, the ferry was not running but it could be running in a few days. I asked why, and they said it needs some parts so they can fix it.I ended up taking the overnight bus to Cairo.I'm sure the ferry is fixed by now but just be aware that the ferry may not be that reliable and have a plan B ready. Please rate this and my other trips if you find them useful, interesting, or like the photos. Thanks. :)

XL airways still flying

by tipoupouc

I just read the news, and apparently XL has already been bought by some iceland bank and should keep flying normally. No cancellation scheduled. Keep an eye on the news before you cancel your flight or you might just loose everything. A friend of mine works for XL and does not seem to be worried about it , he was already there when the company was french and named Star Airlines. Good luck ;o)

Overnight Train Luxor/Cairo

by Robmj

We did this from Luxor upto Cairo, they still had the armed guards posted on top of the train in 2005. The train leaves at 9.30pm and gets you into Cairo at 7am, so very convenient and quite cheap. We took a sleeper carriage which is a little more expensive but well worth it compared to the seats in either second or third class. Got a sleeper just for two, but it was still a little difficult to sleep as the tracks give a bumpy journey. Buy your tickets the day before or you may miss out.

Buses

by Robmj

Egyptian buses have no seat bookings, its first come first served. Generally they are full or over full & if you have to store your bag in the hold, but the time you do this, seats are taken and you could be standing. If there are two of you, the trick is, one put the bags in, the other barge onto bus & grab the seats. Team up with someone if you can. And in some of the bus stations, keep on eye on the area where you put your bag in the hold, they have been known to be taken off!

Trains in Egypt

Bring your own food. The Abela overnight train is not only uncomfortable but the food is exceptionally bad. Train stations have little decent food. However, the first class to Alex from Cairo is perfectly fine. Be prepared that trains do not always run on time!!

High Speed Ferry from Nuwieba to Aqaba

by gottagocit

We traveled from Aqaba to Sharm in March and had an decent experience. The only high speed ferry leaving/arriving Aqaba goes to/from Nuweiba. The experience can be confusing, so I will go into pretty deep detail. I wish I had this information before our trip just so I knew what to expect. We had arranged for transfers on both ends as part of our private tour with Travel in Style which helped a lot. After you purchase tickets, you must put your luggage into one of the luggage compartments underneath a really badly worn out bus which runs from the ticket area to the boat. Expect your luggage (as well as you) to be packed in tightly. At the boat, you collect your luggage and then have a choice of taking it onto the ship yourself or loading it into a very large container where it will be crushed. If you can handle it take it on board yourself. You will walk on board into the massive...

Abela - Deluxe Overnight train

by MikeBird

Mainly, though not exclusively for tourists, this service runs from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan overnight in both directions.I booked the reservations via the web but had to go to the Abela office in the central Rameses Station in Cairo to pay for and collect the tickets. I had to do this 2 days before travel and pay for it in US Dollars. Being Deluxe the train is not cheap ( I think it was $64/per person in a twin bunk cabin) but it includes a reasonably comfortable bunk with fresh bedding, two airline style meals ( supper and breakfast)and access to the bar with evening entertainment - I think it was belly dancer but we didnt go. All in all it's cheaper and greener than flying. We picked the train up at Giza station which was much better than trying to find the right platform at Rameses station. The train arrived only a few minutes late but I must say there were several unscheduled stops in...
