Sheesa Bars / Bedwin Bars!!!! Beware !!!

by sunnyholidays

The Sheesa bars or bedwin bars along the main strip of Naama Bay Please be VERY VERY careful as they rip you off. I sat down with my wife and had a water pipe and two beers and it cost 250 LE thats almost £30 !!!! We found the Underground Bar which is near the Tavern Bar in Naama bay where you can sit outside and have a waterpipe for 15 LE !! and Beer is 20 LE...even better is happy hour 5-8pm large beer is 12 LE !!!Its downstairs so you can't people watch but its a fab place to sit and chat as they have background music....not loud music that is played everywhere else in Naama Bay...Its a wonderful place to escape the hussle and hassle of Naama. Also if shop owners ask you to sign there book...DON'T ...you'll get stuck in there for ages !!!Just be polite and say no thank you. You will get use to the constant calling out from shop owners/workers, try not to stop and chat BUT be polite and...

Be careful of Oil, Perfume store Siwa

by neo12

This is to warn everyone about a store for oils and perfumes called Siwa in Cairo, Egypt--they are a big store and obviously give a hefty commission to travel agents and tour operators, which is why they all take you to that shop. Our travel guide also took us there on our visit a few months ago. And although I hate to say this, every time I look at the bottles of Siwa perfume I feel bitter and am perhaps unconsciously wishing them ill. What you get to smell in the shop, what they show you, is not what they pack for you. We bought over $500 worth of essential oils and 3 blends of popular brand perfumes. At the store what we smelled was intense and we were told we could take it home and dilute it--as it was pure oil. What they packed for us, which of course is packed so well you don’t want to risk opening until you come back home, is a Completely Diluted version of what we were shown at...

SCAMS TO WATCH OUT FOR

by Trixcentrix

1) TICKET SCAMSWhen we went to the Giza pyramids, we took the Metro / subway to El Giza stop, and then got off there to take a 10 minute cab ride to the actual pyramids themselves. The taxi cab driver tried to sell us a " tour " for 50 Egyptian pounds. When we said " no " and emphasised that we were ONLY interested in him driving us from Point A to Point B, one time, he tried to give us the whole ticket scam. Him : " You know, with tickets to the Giza pyramids, there is the " tourist " way and there is the " Egyptian student " way ".Us : "Ok, amuse us...what is the " Egyptian student " way ? Him : " I give you two tickets now....I have two tickets now.."Us : ( Interrupting ) " No thanks - we want the tourist way. Just drive us to the ticket booth and we will pay there ".Be smart and direct. Honestly, think about it : What makes you think that any tickets coming from a sweaty man's ass...

ACT LIKE A " LOCAL " WHEN IT COMES TO MONEY

by Trixcentrix

Egyptians ( especially in Cairo, Giza and Luxor - high tourist areas ) will always try to get money from you, to the point that you will start to feel like a walking wallet. Additionally, you will also see how most of them tend to view tourists as " rich and stupid " ( one of them tried to sell a copper coffee tin can, with a badly made, thinned out bottom to my boyfriend for 250 Egyptian pounds, which we laughed off so crazily, that he must've thought we were nuts in the end ). So how do you deal with the " baksheesh ", over pricing or short changing that occurs ALL THE TIME between an Egyptian and a tourist ? ACT LIKE A LOCAL OR AN EXPAT WHO HAS LIVED IN EGYPT FOR AGES!This requires plenty of research on your part ( if you are an independent traveler ). 1) WHAT WARRANTS " BAKSHEESH " ?a) When someone helps you carry your heavy luggages for you from Point A to Point B, with a nice...

KNOW YOUR PRICES & ARABIC NUMBERS WELL!

by Trixcentrix

It pays to know the prices of BASIC items that are NECESSARY in Egypt. Why? Simply because if you are a foreigners, most places ( especially in big tourist areas like Luxor, Giza and Cairo ), Egyptians will always try to take more money from you by quoting " foreigner prices " for their goods and services.1) DRINKS ( which you will be needing A LOT in Egypt )- Bottled water ( Small : 1.50 - 2 Egyptian pounds. Large : 3 Egyptian pounds. )- Can of soda ( 2 Egyptian pounds )- Coffee ( 3 - 4 Egyptian pounds, dependent on milk or type of coffee )- Tea ( 3 Egyptian pounds )- Juices ( 2 - 3 Egyptian pounds )- Fresh juices ( 5 Egyptian pounds )2) TRANSPORTATIONa) TAXI RIDESFrom Point A to Point B ANYWHERE IN THE DOWNTOWN CAIRO AREA ( the downtown area is pretty small and compact...that even a trip to the island of Zamalek over the bridge, only costs 10 Egyptian pounds : 5 - 10 Egyptian pounds. ATM's

by easterntrekker

Banks ATMS etc.We are always very careful which ATM’s we use when traveling. A couple of people in our group were out of cash so our driver stopped in front of this Bank. It didn’t pass our scrutiny with its broken windows and soaped up doors. We thought it was better to pay a couple of dollars more to exchange money on the Cruise ship!!

Security is tight

by tmiles2

This is not a problem, but an FYI. We were amazed at the tight security everywhere. It's not a joke and the Egyptians take it seriously. Therefore, relax, you'll be scanned thoroughly and oftenat every location. There are armed military and police on every street corner, on buses, walls, etc.We never felt in danger, but realize that security is no laughing matter. Relax and go with the flow.

Don't drink the tap water!!!

by aadil

Don't drink the tap water!!! Water from the Nile river is said to bring people who drink it back to the Nile river!!! I did have some of it on a couple of days and there was nothing wrong with it!!! I mainly stuck to bottled water which was not very expensive if you bought it from a supermarket but if you buy it from the coach driver or from touristy shops then it is bound to be about three to four times the price you pay at the supermarket!!! So buy your water from the supermarkets or big shops where it is pretty cheap compared to other places.

Habibitours in Cairo, Egypt - CAUTION!

by Stefan_Varong

Habibitours did not pay all booked nights at hotels and I had to pay myself the room again! What happened? I’ve booked a tour with program across Egypt with accommodation for 10 nights, transfers, visits and so on. Because I wanted to use some add-ons (for example flights instead of night trains Cairo/Aswan and Luxor/Cairo) I contacted them about the details. I agreed with them to stay one extra night at Luxor. Ten days before the tour started I got another confirmation with additional details about my itinerary. Therein also the flight dates. Nothing had been changed. I came to Cairo Airport and the driver of Habibitours showed-up late, but at least he came. Later I waited twice for the booked driver and nobody showed-up at all. I was brought to my hotel and during the check-in I was told to fill-in an earlier departure date into the registration card than expected according to the...

Easy does it

by TheLongTone

I don't know how many posts I've seen proposing ridiculously crammed itinerararies for Egypt. Cairo, a Nile cuise in a felucca, a camel expedition to the desert, Mount Sinai, we've got four days and were wondering about snorkelling.Cool your jets! In less than a week you've barely time to do a bare minimum if it's to be enjoyable. A brief look at the wonders of Upper Egypt, the obligatory visit to the pyramids at Giza and a taste of Islamic Cairo will be entertainment aplenty and taxing enough.
