Air Quality in Cairo

by graeme83

The air quality in downtown Cairo is pretty bad affecting visibility. The main causes of this are the 2 million cars on the road serving Cairo's massive population. The layout of the city with its tall buildings and narrow streets - combined with a lack of rain - results in a bowl effect making the problem worse. According to the WHO the air quality in Cairo regularly exceeds between 10 and 100 times acceptable levels. Near Midan Tahrir there is a sign showing measurements of that day's air quality. There tends to be a haze in the sky at night and in the morning. When I was there most of this was burnt away by the sun by late afternoon, before reamerging again at night.

No cameras in the Egyptian Museum

by graeme83

Cameras are not allowed inside the Egyptian Museum. If you have your camera with you, you need to leave it at a kiosk in the museum's garden. Someone told me that this was to protect the items from the effects of flash photography. All bags are x-rayed on entrance to the museum. If they spot a camera in the bag they will search it. The person in front of me got caught trying to take one in and had to put it in storage before re-entering.

Cairo Traffic

by graeme83

Yes it really is as bad as people say it is. Indeed crossing the roads in Cairo is one of my favourite travel memories. A hint given to me by a couple of people was to follow next to a local person crossing the road. That hint was definately heeded for the first couple of days. BTW you know you've been in Cairo too long when locals follow you when crossing the road :)

Heat

by graeme83

I was travelling in Egypt in November / December when the temperature is meant to be more bearable. However, even at this time of year I was struggling. I tended to get up early and do a bit of sightseeing, come back to my accomodation in the middle of the day for a siesta and then go out again in the evening. Headgear and lots of water are highly recommendedThe heat is much more noticable the further south (and away from the coast) in the country you go. I've put down the average low-high temperatures down for Aswan below:Jan 10-30C Feb 11-26CMarch 14-31CApril 19-36C May 23-39C June 26-42C July 26-41C Aug 26-41C Sept 24-39COct 22-37C Nov 17-31C Dec 12-25C

the weather

by uglyscot

Egypt is thought to be a hot country, which it is, but between November and March the weather can be cold enough to need a coat and sweaters. Inside the buildings can be freezing as many apartments have ceramic tiled floors, so unless there are carpets, the inside may be colder than out. Air conditioners may have a heating element, or oil filled radiators may be bought. We spent our first night in a hotel, then moved to an apartment. Next morning we had to go out and buy duvets and an oil heater, and get carpets put down.Rain may fall in this period too, though rarely very heavy or often. Just enough to wash the trees of the dust, and form a few puddles in the road.In the months before summer sets in there is a season called 'khamaseen'. These are 50 days when dust can fill the air and reduce visibility. This can be experienced in Dubai, or in a more extreme form , 'the haboob', in...

Pedestrian crossings - beware

by uglyscot

The traffic in Cairo is horrendous and the drivers are worse. Pedestrians are not considered important at all. If there are pedestrian crossings marked on the road, they might as well not exist. NOBODY WILL STOP.In my early days I stood for half an hour trying to cross a main road. I know others who gave up and took a taxi to get them there. Now I wait until local Egyptians, especially women with children, begin to cross and join them . It may still entail weaving your way between cars, but if one person holds his hand up, drivers will try to avoid hitting you.

Food Hygiene

by graeme83

On my first day in Cairo I was walking around the markets and was quite shocked by the standards of hygiene regarding meat in butcher shops. Almost every piece of meat that I saw in every butcher shop was surrounded by hundreds of flys. It was enough to make me vegetarian for the duration of my stay in Egypt.
