Scam Number 2 - Dealing with taxi drivers

by graeme83

This tip is not just limited to Egypt but pretty much every country in the world. I needed to get a taxi from a bus station in Cairo to my hotel. I find that the best way to deal with taxi drivers is to tell them that you need to hire a driver - him - for a day long trip the next day (which I did). I'll take down his name and number and tell him that I will call him the next day for his services, asking him his price etc during the journey. This way I tend to get a fair price for my taxi journey.I did get a fair price for my journey, but didn't like the driver. He tried about 300 times to take me to a different hotel (where he gets commission). For this reason I never called him back.

Scams

by graeme83

Never in my life have I encountered so many people trying to scam me for money as in Egypt. The scamming, lying, cheating and aggressiveness is everywhere. Most of the time, I felt like the average Egyptian that I encountered considered me nothing but a dollar sign to exploit. This is bad because I am sure that the vast majority of Egyptians are friendly, honest and generous. However, the bad elements are attracted to tourists like magnets. I'll list some of the attempts below.

Alcohol during the holy month

by marimar_72

In Ramadan(Muslim`s holy month for fasting)many restaurants and night clubs refrain from serving alcohol,so the only way to get an alcoholic drink is to oder room service and drink it in your room only!Apart from the holy month of Ramadan, there are few other days around the year where Egypt becomes a dry country (you should ask your tour guide when do these days fall).

Going into pyramid - not for claustrophobics!

by jumpingnorman

I had never been claustrophobic - but I realized I had panic attacks when I entered the Great Pyramid. The entrance is so small and you have to crouch going through the tunnel with such a long line of people with no sight in end. On top of this, you could smell the stenchy smell of shoes (and feet) from all over the world! But I just had to get in and see what is in there! So, you just pay a little fee (forgot how much it was, but who cares?) This is the only Seventh Wonder from the Ancient World remaining!I saw a small child, maybe three years old, standing perfectly in the tunnel and somehow I wished I was that small again. The air was stifling, with probably a lesser amount of oxygen. But once you get to the burial chamber, it is a big enough room and you kinda dread having to leave it again because you have to pass through the tunnel again. Definitely not for claustrophobics...

Riding Camels in egypt

by embodiedspirit

I read many many posts on this site before my trip, about the dangers of riding camels in Egypt. Everyone wants to do it as part of their Egyptian experience, especially at the Pyramids. The advice about NOT RIDING CAMELS is spot on! Only do it with a tour guide's permission/prior arrangement. We did it with the tour group at the Pyramids. Even then, looking at a group of about 40 camels with Egyptian camel drivers next to them and the Sahara desert behind was daunting! At least the English tour guide was right there and they only use reputable camel driver groups. Some Egyptian camel drivers can be cunning - you go up to the camel to take a photo, they put you on the camel for free to take a photo, and before you know it,you're riding across the Sahara and it is free to get up on a camel but can be VERY EXPENSIVE to get down! And frightening! (It didn't happen to us but it has happened...

Don't drink even filtered water on boat; health

by jumpingnorman

The expensive cruises may say they have filtered water, but still it is drinking at your own risk --- you can still get some kind of nasty viral diarrhea. You don't want to spoil your cruise with that! So, just stay from having the water orally --- I even brush my teeth with bottle water just to make sure...and although you may not think of it now, you might decide on swimming in the Nile! I think it would be prudent not to...health, health, health...Also, another important point, make sure you have your Hepatitis A vaccination.

The old Money Switcheroo trick

by Batface

It only happened once to me, but I was told by some locals that it's common. There are Pound notes and Piastre notes. If you're aware, you can avoid the scam. I handed a 50 Pound note to pay for something and was immediately handed back a 50 Piastre note by the vendor telling me I didn't give him enough. Stupidly, I dug into my wallet and gave him another bill.To make things worse, (they knew they had an idiot) I didn't pay attention while they wrapped up an empty box and handed it to me.
