Bad Tour agent in Egypt "Cinderella Egypt" tours

by gitwet40

we were given the incorrectly dated train tickets from Cairo to Aswan. Our local flights were at 1am or 2am and then we were expected to start a tour a 9am with out sleep. This happened twice.Missed Abu Simbel because of the itinerary.Had to cancel day trip to Alexandria because of too many hours for my mother.Asked to be refunded but received a rude response !A few guides demanded that we tip everywhere we visited! (i used a washroom that was a hole in the ground & was told to give a tip)Avoid Cinderella Tours at all means!Avoid the Cairo zoo ~ the animals live & are treated inhumanely ~ garbage everywhere!Women should avoid traveling alone ~ the men are very aggressive !

Food Allergies

by Court94403

For some travelers who may be allergic to wheat, gluten or corn, etc; a meal with rice might be easier tolerated. Rice is available in every restaurant in Egypt. Most meals consist of pita bread, rice, salad or vegetables, and a meat dish of your choice; chicken, beef, lamb, or fish. Dips of Babaghanouj and Hummus (eggplant and garbanzo beans) will round out your meal. You may also want to be careful and make sure all the veggies you eat while you are there are cooked especially of you have a sensitive stomach.

Safety for Single Female Travellers in Egypt

by NilePrincess

There is a lot of misinformation about travel for females in Egypt and I just wanted to offer some advice on this, as somone who has actually done it.I traveled both with a travel buddy so I'm speaking from that vantage point, but there were days I went about alone so I will also offer advice for that as well. My travel buddy and I (both female) traveled to Alexandria, Cairo, Luxor and Aswan and had no problems. First, dress conservatively. I need to take a moment to address this. People have different opinions on what this means but the general consensus is to cover shoulders, stomach and knees and avoid form fitting clothes; there is no need to cover your head. You will, of course, find women who say that it didn't matter what they wore and they were 'treated just fine' by the locals. These women don't understand the image they project in a predominantly Muslim culture and also don't...

Hot, Hot, and HOT !!

by MikeySoft

It was hot in southern Egypt in April 2008, a high around 40 or 45C, over 100F. I saw several senior people faint in the heat, so be careful. It is very dry and you may not realize your body is lousing so much water.

Photos in Museums, Tombs, and inside the Pyramids

by MikeySoft

Taking photos in most Museums, tombs and inside the Pyramids is officially banded. But many people do. Some use phone cameras and some use regular cameras. Sometimes you can take photos by paying Baksheesh (tip), sometime we sneak taking pictures. However, you could get caught. I don't know what they do when they catch someone. But when they caught someone in a tomb, they took him outside. Then everyone else left started taking pictures because the guards where no longer in the tomb. The Cairo Museum is very strict, but we were able to take some.Never use a flash, the bright light could damage what you are taking a picture of. I saw someone taking photos of the mummies in the Cairo Museum. The flash brought the attentions of the gauds, he did not get caught but they stopped someone else with a camera.

Karnak crowds -

by rcsparty

If you are visiting the Karnak Temple with kids, keep a very close eye on them. It is easy to get distracted with all the sights, and since the temple is mobbed with people, it is easy to lose them. Especially, as kids tend to wander around. We lost a 9 year old in our tour group, and after a frantic 30 minute search, fortunately we found him.

Trash -

by rcsparty

When travelling in Cairo, be prepared to see a lot of trash..in the canals, fields, around houses. At first, it was somewhat disturbing, but after some time, it just served to show me what incredible resiliancy the people of Cairo have.

Armed Guards -

by rcsparty

If you are on a guided tour, prepare yourself to always be accompanied by armed guards. There were some people in our group that were somewhat uncomfortable, always being accompained by an AK-47. Clearly, there were some guards that didn't make me feel overly safe, but at the same time, I got some great information talking to them.

Airport Guard Scratching Statue with Key

by jumpingnorman

I enjoyed my trip in Egypt. I bought a nice statue of the God of Wisdom (Toth?) which was made out of basalt (I think - some dark stone) which I got from a reputable statue store. I decided to handcarry it, and after it passed thru the x-ray, the guard asked me where and how much I bought it. I said just less than a couple of hundred dollars, and then he looked at me again, brought out his key and to my amazement, scratched the head of the statue! I was just shocked but still just smiled, and then he said, "Go". Later, I realized he must have been looking at my reaction when he scratched it to see if it was an authentic 3000 year old statue(illegal to smuggle out ancient artifacts), or maybe to see if it is real stone?? But I think I did the right thing by not arguing or getting mad because you don't want to fight with authorities in foreign countries where you don't know the language. I...

Gps on mobile phones

by timwallick

Its worth a mention that for reasons on national security egypt currently maintains a ban on gps enabled mobile phones. many of the 3G type phones are currently in use world wide and within egypt.I only mention this due to the fact, it recently begain to surface within the media outlets as a issue. That said,I see these device almost daily in use everyplace. But the law is the law.Everybody I talked with says its a none issue when clearing customs.Telecoms Law 10/2003 outlaws the import of GPS-equipped mobile phones, and retailers found selling them may have their stocks confiscated. Authorities, however, turn a blind eye to individual users owning these restricted handsets.
