The Dreaded Pharoah's Revenge.

by NilePrincess

Many people are afaid of trying local foods for fear of becoming sick. I just want to reiterate that you should not cut yourself off from trying the local fare. It's often not the food that gets you sick but a combination of other things, including your body's own natural resistance. Just make sure the food is hot and fresh. Definitely take anti-bacterial wipes as the money is often filthy, especially the small bills. Many brands of bottled water now have plastic wrapped over the regular twist-off seals so go for those first. Do not drink ice cold water while out in the intense heat, or head directly into air conditioned rooms after coming in from it. I have had cheese and milk without problems and Movenpick ice cream was often the highlight of my day. ;-) Fresh juices are also really good, especially the strawberry and mango. All meats, provided they are well cooked are fine. I even had...

Bakshish

by txkarrs

In my travels, the only place I've ever felt threatened was in Egypt when I was walking alone on a street right next to my cruise ship. I was within view of the ship personnel. Men approached me and actually grabbed my arm and tried to get money from me. When I didn't give them any; they started swearing at me and using sexually abusive language. I would recommend that women travelling to Egypt stay in groups or use a guided tour. Everywhere that I went, I was completely surrounded by people wanting money, holding out their hands and saying, "bakshish," which must be the Arabic word for money or tip. At the pyramids, people ask to hold things for you or they hand something to you, or ask to take a photo for you and then they want money. At the airport or when you go to take a taxi, they pull your bags from your hands, forcefully, and then demand payment. One time I was going from a train...

Camel Ride Abduction by the Pyramids

by jumpingnorman

I love Egypt, but sometimes you meet some people who just want more $ from you (but don't let that spoil the fun - just be on your guard). I was standing at the corner of the Great Pyramid, when a uniformed guard approached me and asked if I wanted my picture taken. I said yes and handed my camera to him, and made my pose and smiled...then before I knew it, a camel was beside me, and then another guy took my camera from the guard, and then this kid from nowhere shoved me onto the camel and then the camel started to walk and I was just hanging on.. while the other guy was still taking pictures...and we we're moving away from the pyramid as I tried to ask them to put me down....fortunately, my guide came to my rescue and asked where they were taking me??? later I learned that sometimes they do take you to a secluded part and ask for more money to take you back. I just shoved I think a...

WOMEN travellers in EGYPT

by Potato-Brigade

Egypt is a bad place for women travellers. Be advised. Here are only two examples of the many things I have experienced traveling in Egypt. An Ozzie girl took ill one morning and couldn't come along with the rest of us from the hostel so we went into the valley of the Kings without her. Anyway, this girl wasn't allowed back into the hostel during the day (it's closed you see) but that didn't matter because she wanted to rest in the warmth of the sun along the bank of the Nile. She found a good spot and lay herself down to recuperate. From the bushes a teenage boy was lurking and whispered to her "Madame, I love you!" She didn't pay him much mind and eventually dozed off. She awoke minutes later finding the boy straddling her stomach. He had her blouse pulled up to her chin and was foundling her breasts. She tried to push him off off but he wouldn't be dislodged. Finally she let out a...

EGYPT: Involuntary "baksheesh"

by Potato-Brigade

I've travelled the length of Egypt coming by boat (from Beirut) to Alexandria and down to the border with Sudan on through the rest of Africa .....Egypt is not an easy country to travel. Be wary and on your guard. ALWAYS count your change and NEVER, NEVER, NEVER buy anything unless you're absolutely certain of the price. Make sure that the seller shows you the price "in writing" no matter what he says and then refer to what he wrote in case of discrepancies. This applies to EVERYTHING: even restaurants and hairdressers.

Baksheesh culture

by DanielF

Like most of the countries in the area, Egypt wants your money and feels no shame whatsoever about it. There are no subtleties at all when the first thing you have to do upon arrival at the airport is paying the visa fee. That will anticipate the over-developed baksheesh culture that reigns in the country. Most Egyptians are no doubt genuinely friendly and helpful, but particularly in areas with an abundance of tourists, avoid looking at, listening or talking to any local. Any favour, even any remunerated service, should be accompanied by a tip, so do not forget to carry enough cash in small denominations. Do feel as dumb as they regard you and avoid feeling bad for contemplating how poverty has made those people forget the notion of pride. Let alone the aggressive peddlers in the bazaar who will ruin any attempt to do some pleasurable shopping.

Beware of Pickpockets

by nitinpandey

Aswan is famous for pickpockets. So beware especially in the area around the Railway Station as it is crowded. Touts try to distract your attention like one tried to push papyrus paintings onto my chest with one hand and tried to open my waistpouch with his other hand.

High Season

by grayfo

Travel to Egypt slightly out of season, smog, and sunburn (from the 40C heat) and all round hassles are far worse from June to August. September and May are the best months to go, with reasonable temperatures and fewer tourists than in high-summer.

Getting Drunk

by grayfo

The majority of Egypt’s population is Muslim, so please respect this. Drinking of alcohol is actually forbidden by the Koran, for this reason alcoholic drinks can be very expensive. Bear in mind that being drunk in public could also result in the offender being given a jail term.

Nile Cruise water supply

by VZ-Pam

Tap water in the Nile Cruise is very contaminated, people should use bottle water to brush and rinse. In addition, in the Cruise dining room, try to avoid eating salads like those with lettuce which are washed but not cooked. I recommend eating cooked food only because me and my friends feel funny in our stomach afterwards. Luckily we had prepared some egyptian medication with us for that. Whew !
