Miscellaneous: This is the best, most up-to-date guidebook you can find about Eritrea (and neighbouring Ethiopia).
Definitely recommended, and remember to get one before arriving in the country as it doesn't seem to be available there!

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: October to February can producce colder than usual weather and warm clothing for the evenings (32C by day, 9C by night) as well as rain wear would be a good idea to bring.
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Anit-Malarial medications if you plan to venture out below the 2000 meter level. Toiletry items are available, but may not be to the same standard that you are use to. Bring sufficient if you prefer a specific product.
Photo Equipment: Photo supplies, and film development is available.
Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Massawa offers beaches on the Red Sea, but the temperature can reach mid-40 Celsus. Appropriate sun block would be prudent to bring.
Miscellaneous: A good Mosquito bed net should be brought if you plan to camp out or stay in accomidations below the 2000 meter level.

Miscellaneous: A bit bulky, but the best guide to take if you wish to identify Eritrea's interesting birds, many of which are localized in their distribution and therefore not covered in most other field guides.

Miscellaneous: The only guidebook to Eritrea alone.
Unfortunately it is a rather poor one, but if you are desperate for more info than there is in the LP guide, get this one in addition to (NOT instead of!) it.

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Snorkelling gear for Massawa beaches and islands and for the Dhalak archipelago.
The locally available things for rent are not good enough for trouble-free snorkelling.
