The cool and scenic mountains around Asmara are an excellent hiking territory.
Many monasteries or small settlements are only accessible on footpaths.
The only problem is the lack of decent maps!
You can get a basic booklet giving ideas on where to hike, and sketch-maps and estimated times in some bookshops in Asmara with the title "Asmara walks".
