  • Train from asmara to massawa

    Asmara Off The Beaten Path

Early this year, i travelled to Eritrea, a lovely country on the red sea. I took a fantastic train trip from the capital city of asmara down to the coastal town of Massawa. The train is an old one from the italian erra, the eritreans have maintained the trains very well. The trip took me around wonderful hills and villages.

  • The price level and black market

    Asmara Favorites

The black market is a big industry in Asmara. Money exhange on the illegal black marked gives twice as good rate than the official rate. Then it's the cheapest country in East-Africa together with Ethiopia. If not the price level is the same as Namibia and Botswana. Tips: You have to declare your money on a customs receipt when you enter the...

  • Not much selection, but what a catch!

    Massawa Restaurants

The restraunt was small and unassuming. Inside two men were cooking fish inside an inset oven, almost like an Indian Tandoor.Selection? Your choice was big fish or little fish . . but wow - this place was amazing. What's to say?

    Massawa Restaurants

Ok how do I get this started, I eat in a few diferent places, food is overall pretty good here, in one restaurant I had what was descrived as a traditional burger, I didn't know burgers were tradiotional here, lol, anyways the meat was more then likely camel meat, just because I didn't see a lot of cattle around, but did see lots of...

    Massawa Things to Do

Massawa is made up of 2 islands Massawa and Taulud, plus the mainland which is mostly residential. Massawa Island is the best place to walk around and see interesting and charming architecture. In the side streets opposite the harbour you will find a 17th century coral block house. Coral was once the traditional building material for Massawa houses....

  • The trail

    Nefasit Things to Do

The trail from Nefasit up to Debre Bizen is very obvious - you certainly dont need a guide to go up there. It is wide and well-trodden, lined with stones. At the roadside near the trail-head in Nefasit there is a small store selling bottled mineral water. Get at least two bottles, as it is a long, and possibly quite hot walk up there.Once on the...

    Nefasit Transportation

Nefasit is about an hour from Asmara along the road to Massawa. With an early start, Debre Bizen can be visited as a stopover between those two cities. It takes 2-3 hours to climb to the monastery from Nefasit.Remember that you need to get a permit in Asmara before visiting!

  • The views

    Nefasit Things to Do

Well, the views alone make a visit here worthwhile. On a clear day, you could see all the way down to the Red Sea coast from here (I didn't). There are some great viewpoints from the monastery itself, but I also found it very interesting to follow the confusing, narrow trails outside to some of the higher hillocks outside.

  • The Old Cathedral

    Keren Things to Do

The old cathedral is very small and easy to miss, being overshadowed by the new cathedral. However it is so quaint and pretty it is a pity to pass it by. Sometimes you can go inside if it is open, and you can walk around in the yard and admire the beautiful old brickwork.

  • The New Cathedral

    Keren Things to Do

The new Cathedral is very attractive for a modern building. I'm not sure when it was built but it was fairly recently. Its beautiful blue glass domes dominate the city and shine in the sunlight. The brickwork is very decorative and a lovely warm shade of terracotta. The interior is sparsely furnished but very nice as it is extremely bright, which...
