It is located on EU Road, near the Green View Pastry. The restaurant provides Lebanese food; shish kebab, lamb chops, chicken tikka and many more. It is popular with the French tourists and diplomats. Here, the Ethiopian waitresses even speak Arabic in Lebanese dialect. It is a very expensive restaurant in that area, for a simple chicken tikka with humus will cost you around 180-220 bir (15-20 dollars)
Favorite Dish: Their Chicken Tikka is good. Order it with Hummus and some Lebanese pickles..yammy.
It is located in Piazza area on the other side of Etege Taitu hotel. Despite the name (Omar Khayam is a Persian poet), the restaurant has nothing to do with Persian or Persian cuisine. The place is cramped with both locals as well as Europeans because of the cheap food they serve. You may come across many tour guides there.
Favorite Dish: Avoid eating the fish cutlets, it is horrible.
Traditional Ethiopian food is served on a big plate and all the people around the table eat from the same plate. The table is called Mesob. It is the traditional table and is made out of woven straw. It has an hour glass shape and is circular.
The main course is the big injira bread. Different kind of meat and spices are served on top of the bread. Everybody wash their hands before eating.
The price for the food was less than 15-20 USD for me, 1 bottle of Axum wine and 2 beers included. With cultural show and music all night.
Addis is blessed with a lot of excellent restaurants. It’s also cursed by a few bad ones in a country renowned for its mouth-watering cuisine. Virtually none of the restaurants have a website. I have 2 good sites below that you can quickly look at and print up a very large list of restaurants in Addis. The second site has listings for Ethiopian restaurants – worldwide. There might be one near you!
What's Up Addis! A very long listing
Ethiopian Restaurant. A world-wide directory
Hermon is not a 3-star restaurant by any means, but it is a great place to meet. You walk up a lot of flight of stairs to get the most commanding views of the Piazza. You can take photos from here and also have a good lunch. I always get the club sandwich. Expect to wait, but it’s worth it. Give the burgers a miss. There are plenty of better restaurants for an evening meal, but good for lunch. You can have some really great juice drinks (pictured) or a cold beer if you wish. Always get a male waiter if you are here. They make sure the kitchen gets your order done quickly and their service is fantastic. Hermon also has a cheap internet café halfway down the stairs.
Favorite Dish: Club Sandwich. Expect 30 minutes to make as its made fresh.
This place seems to be in all the guidebooks. It serves tuna melts, burgers, chips and pastries. It is always busy and highly recommended by the same guidebooks. Look next door though. It’s called Evians and looks about the same. It’s always busty as well. Must both be good to be this busy. To be honest I never ate at either. With meal prices being so cheap there are great restaurants with more room to manoeuvre than these 2.
Open for breakfast, luch and dinner.
Need a quick, cheap and reasonably good place for a meal? Look no farther! Wutma is a great place to stay and eat at. Many meals are less than $2. The staff are lovely folks and the food is good. You may find the roast chicken is fried at lunch, but the pasta is always good. Their injera is tasty and you can order ‘Marhabaroui’, which is a sample of several Ethiopian dishes. Cold (and I mean cold) beers are about 50 US cents. You just can’t go wrong here.
Oddly, they keep the restaurant dark at all times.
If price is no object, then eat here one night. One of the few restaurants in Addis where it pays to dress smartly. The food is excellent, the staff are very professional and they have the best wine list in Ethiopia. In fact if you are a wine lover, this is the restaurant for you. Very few Ethiopian restaurants have anything more than the 2 domestic brands: Axumite and Gouder.
Despite being a French restaurant, the portions are good sized. Its more food to eat than art.
They take credit cards, no problem.
Favorite Dish: THIS IS A DAO RECOMMENDED RESTAURANT
The food is below average, the coffee is good and it just happens to be the only Wi-Fi Internet Café in Ethiopia. Don’t expect anything except very slow speeds, but it does work. Food always seems a little stale and is overpriced by local standards. Having said that, you only come here to use your laptop for free.
Favorite Dish: Coffee
Wow, an amazing Ethiopian food but more amazing is the dance and music show that is taking place every night. Don't be mistaken, it is not a "Tourist" folk show like in other places in Africa, here most of the audiance are Ethiopians. Highly recomended.
Note that in 2008 Jod has changed location a little off the center area, still good food and great show!
Excellent food in authentic atmosphere, usually live music, sometimes dance show as well. Very few tourists, many locals. The excellent food is served with a lot of respect. Show up early to get a view of the dancers/musicians. Located on Bole road.
Slightly hard to find, but worth finding! It’s in Meskal Square near the Post Office and around the corner from the National Hotel. My pizza (pictured) was lovely and had loads of meat and cheese. My friends had a burger and a club sandwich and rated them highly. It’s a great place for a spot of lunch and the service is great. If you are in the area, stop in for a good pizza and a cold drink.
Favorite Dish: PIZZA !
There are a few pizza places around the Piazza area and this is one of the best. In the evening it has covered outdoor seating so you get a nice atmosphere without getting wet in the rainy season. The food is very good and really from scratch. That means you will be waiting for the food, but its worth it. Lunch time is very slow and you have to sit downstairs. Worth a meal if you are here for a while.
Just north of Piazza on the road (right side) on the way to Arat Kilo.
The Cottage not only has a restaurant but a great Pub in the back. The restaurant is mostly dark wood and has a warm and cozy feeling to it.
Favorite Dish: Apart from the pepper steak which they serve with just the right amount of creamy pepper sauce they also serve fondue for two which I think is a must try. They also serve a good Irish Coffee.
This is an easy going restaurant where you get great food at good value for money. They have a big fish tank, this keeps the kids busy.
Favorite Dish: The chicken wings and masal chips are a great favorite of mine when I go there. Its a must try. you must like spicy food though as both are spicy. The chicken wings can be ordered sweet n' sour, and less spicy.
