    Shoe shine

by flynboxes Written Dec 24, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Africa is a dusty place. You will find shoe shine vendors on every street corner it seems like but the ones in the Piazza I think are the best. They will wash, dye and polish for a few bir....the locals pay 3 bir....I gave this guy 5 since the last time I shined these boots was the night I left Cairo a few years ago. There is even a guy who sells cheap local coffee pots around here from time to time.

Now all I needed was a shave....

Entoto mariam church is located in Entoto hills above Addis. You can visit the church, the museum and Haile Salase (reconstructed) palace. Next to it is the Kidus Raguel church that is also worth a visit.

Driving through Awash National Park for the sixth time in the past 15 years was just great, but the meal at the Ras Hotel Restaurant in Awash Park was superior! The restaurant is located next to the rental caravans, high above a gorge overlooking the Awash river. The view is spectacular and the food is remarkable. This small restaurant, with electricity provided by a generator, did offer cold drinks. The intense heat helped them warm up very quickly. There was no menu, but the chef prepared just what we asked for. Three vegetarians had a delightful meal of delicious cooked vegetables, including potatoes, cabbage, carrots as well as shirro (chickpeas) and the staple injera!. I can't begin to describe the fantastic taste of these rather run of the mill veggies. The chef must be a true genius!

  • Lucy, my love.

by RblWthACoz Written Jun 23, 2006

The National Museum has several levels that show even more than the famous 3.5 million year old skeletal remains of Lucy. I was most impressed, being the art buff that I am, with the art collection on the second floor that showcased numerous styles, periods, and artists from Ethiopia. The third level has numerous artifacts that are generally labeled in, if I can recall correctly since I didn't write it down, 19 different displays. They just plainly state things like "agricultural tools" or "religious items" or something basic like that. Beyond that which is displayed in the building, there are several sculptures on display outside of the building to the right (as you enter). No doubt if you are in town you would plan on seeing it anyways...so what do you need this review for? Hmmmmm?? (Feel free to rate me anyways though :-P)

    ASNI Gallery

This gallery shows contemporary Ethiopian Art. The gallery is housed in a early 20th century residence and have a very relaxing and quiet atmosphere. Upstairs they have a display of works by Etiopian artists. The ground floor is reserved for temporary exhibitions. When I visited ground floor was closed. They also serves a vegitarian buffed lunch on Thursdays and Saturdays at 13.00. It costs 50 birr, and just having some tea on the balcony is a good alternative.

Addis, exhibition in the open-air at the campus

by sachara Written Oct 13, 2005

After visiting the Ethnological museum of Addis Abeba, we saw this beautiful burial stone in the open air. There was no explanation, but we thought, it must be, after seeing the same kind of stones in the exhibition in the museum.

Walking around in the park of the University's Campus we saw more artefacts, but also nice statues and fountains.

    Addis Abeba, University's main campus

Addis Abeba has a lot of green in town, like the valleys and wide avenues edged by trees.
I liked the park of the campus of the University. After visiting the ethnological Museum, it's nice to look around.

There are many different trees and beautiful flowering plants. At sunday afternoon a lot of students walked around or sat on benches in the shade.
There was a small open air bar with a lot of shade. Here we took a softdrink, sitting between the students.

    Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia

When you are in Addis Abeba, you don't have the feeling to be in a 5.000.000 million city.
Addis Abeba is a mix of the past and the present, the city and the small-town feel, the modern apartment buildings and the small houses with zinc roofs.

At some places the city is hilly and intersected by some rivers and green valleys.
In the Piazza area with many hotels, cafes and bars, you can see the legacy of the very short Italian occupation. We stayed in this area.

You can see Addis Abeba in a few days. There are some interesting museums and the Merkato, the largest market in Africa.

Several statues remain from the era when Ethiopia was socialist. If you like this kind of thing, the best we found was on Churchill Ave.
