This is the parade ground of Ethiopia. There are always displays, festivals or at least some kids playing football (soccer) here. It’s worth a look to see what’s going on in Addis. The Addis Ababa museum is up on the hill to the left. Also along the square are banks, the Post Office, Tourist Information, restaurants and a grocery store.

    Meskel Square

To get to anywhere in ADDIS you must pass thru this square. Formerly known as Revolution Square in the era of the Derg it is more of an opening traffic area than a grand space. Tall hotels and government facades line the north side and there are concrete viewing stands on the opposite. The tourist office is here but is very sparse. The Addis Ababa Museum also borders the perimeter but not noticeably. There is no need to linger, unless you want to get knocked over!
