Heading back to Addis from Awasa
3 more images

For me half the fun was getting here. It's about a 3-4 hour drive depending on traffic. Heading back to Addis at night can take a bit longer and after seeing all the traffic accidents on my way down there I was not all that interested in being on the road at night.
So depending on how many cars/trucks you can pass while heading into traffic in the opposite lane you might shave some time off the trip....it was a great little road trip in the end.

Eagle is in the trees to the right

The Shoreline Trail runs about 3.4 km around the lake. You can either hike/walk or bike it.
While I saw the eagle from a boat you could see it and others from the trail, it's a great way to see the lake and it's free.

See the hippos

For about 200 bir (try to haggle with them to get it lower) and they will take you out to see the hippos on the Northern shore of the lake (if you don't see hippos you don't pay). The boat is a flat bottomed dory that leaked a bit..nothing to worry about just be prepared to get your feet wet or bail the water out first. Don't worry the boat won't sink. It's about a 20-30 min ride to the North. You should be able to get within 20-30 yards of the hippos. Get too close and they go under or at least they did for me.

its a fishmarket with the Lake Awasa. You have to go in the morning. Take a horse taxi from town. Look at the horse, some of them are soooo skinny!! try to pick one who have had food lately. In the fishmarket they fry the fish, its fresh and tasty and cheap. No problem to eat it! but dont drink the local beer they serve.

Boats can be rented cheap here and as with my hippo tip the more people you have the cheaper it is. Driver/skipper sits in the back and you can fit about 6 others on them.

Awasa is a small town south of Addis Ababa. The city itself is nothing, but if you go to lake Awasa, its soooo nice!

A bit of the South

While I did not have time to head into the true South ie: Arba Minch etc.. I did take a day trip down here. I guess they call Awasa the capital of the Southern Nations? half of the fun for me was just...
