Climbing in Debre Damo

by SirRichard

Not really a sport activity but you do some exercise indeed. When visiting Debre Damo monastery in the north, near Adigrat, you can get here either by private car or walking from the junction (11km).BUT, the last 20-30 metres up there are no steps, no track. The only way to enter the monastery is climbing to the top with a rope they throw you from the gate. There is also a second rope tied to your waist, so it is not an extremely difficult effort, but I can tell you it takes time till you get to the top! When you see the monks climbing up and down (old men of 90 years old) you think it's easy but wait till you start climbing, Haha!
