THE NATIONAL MUSEUM - ADDIS ABABA
  • Tip Rating:
  • What the National Museum lacks in size, it makes up with great displays. Relics from Stone Age man all the way through modern day are on display. Some of the more interesting exhibits are coronation thrones of the Emperors, tribal exhibits with clothes & weapons, art, musical instruments and hand made animal-skin Bibles written in Geez. They are able to even display more than 200 styles of cross found across the country. There are some exhibits related to several Emperors that tell the story of Ethiopia. Their most prized display is of our ancient ancestor LUCY. There is also a disturbing set of displays related to the starvation and Communist persecution. A must visit here in Addis.

It is open from 0830-1230 and 1330-1730. Please note it has a dual pricing policy (local/foreigner). No flash photography is allowed.

    RETURN GLASS BOTTLES
  • Tip Rating:
  • In Ethiopia there is a deposit, paid by the shop or bar owner, on every glass bottle of drink. In some places they may even refuse to sell you soda in a bottle if they do not know you! That’s because they are worried you will leave with their bottle. Just assure them that you will drink it right away and hand the bottle back. So take care with the bottles and if you get some from the grocery store, please leave them for the hotel staff.

    Gondar on Sunday
  • Tip Rating:
  • can also be a little bit like Timkat, if you go to a church. Best is to ask around if by chance this is the day of the patron saint of a particular church as at these days the celebrations are more extensive.

    Assale Salt Lake
  • Tip Rating:
  • is a vast flat brownish salt plain in most parts, but near the water the salt is still white and glistening. We were lucky that it was a bit cloudy the day we were there, because it was hot enough. And the light added to the already unworldly atmosphere.

    LUCY - THE FIRST HUMAN
  • Tip Rating:
  • "'Lucy," is the oldest hominid that has ever been found and your relative most likely. Lucy was found by Donald Johanson and Tom Gray on November 24, 1974, at Hadar. She has been dated as living 3.5 million years ago. Her name comes from Archaeologists who named her after the Beatles song, "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." Unfortunately, the real skeleton of Lucy cannot be displayed because the fossilized bones are so fragile. What you do see is very small as Lucy was only about 3-1/2 feet tall and weighed a very slight 60 to 65 pounds.

She does have a room devoted to her in the National Museum.

    Tigray's roads
  • Tip Rating:
  • Maybe a transportation tip - but...?
When traveling in the northern part of Ethiopia the engineering works that has gone into road planning and construction never cease to amaze.
There are many serious ups and downs and the switch-backs are many and impressive.
One of the implications of this is slow travel and the occasional accident or huge truck with military or civilian load that gets stuck in a curve.

  • Visit the Blue Nile Falls near the source of the river at Lake Tana.
you wouldn't think that Ethiopia could have such green surroundings. The water fall is just an incredible site. It is massive. Don't get too close to the water, there are crocodiles in there.

In this most beautiful landscape, one of the least understandable conflicts is being played out. A hundered thousand people got killed during the war in year 2000, when Ethiopia wanted to retake some land areas and punish Eritrea, and Eritrea was entrenched in its own special views on its invincibility and pride. While the leaders of the two respective countries have been to school together, eat the same food and speak the same language? Now Ethiopia refutes the UN border delineations. You will probably not be able to go into the war-torn border areas as such, but you can see the landscape and sense the mood of the area.
It is a very dramatic landscape, with colors like the American south-west, sculpted mountains, canyons and little stone masonry houses green dots where people grow teff and othe crops. Go to see the landscape and how people live, and think about what the quarrels with Eritrea add to their lives. Next time you can do the same thing in Eritrea, but the probability is that you cannot get this close to the border.
