KLM

FLY KLM TO GET HERE!Why I like KLM:• Always polite, friendly flight crews that seem to enjoy working with each other• Fantastic booking website where you can search for flight 1 month at a glance!• Great prices on long haul flights• Free drinks! Just ask for more• Comfortable planes• Excellent in-flight entertainment (pictured)• Good food (pictured)You can join their Frequent Flyer Programme for free – it’s called Flying Blue. And you get to board the plane first – even if you have an economy ticket!Great airline. Give them a Fly!PLEASE NOTE: The flight between Amsterdam and Addia Ababa stops in Kartoum, Sudan.

Ethiopian Air

by boltonian

Ethiopian air is the only choice for dometic flights. Cheaper and much faster than driving, it is silly not to consider taking a flight or two.Flights cost around £35 one way. A flight from Addis to Gonder takes just under an hour, saving up to 9 hours if you drive. The airline is rated in the top safety bracket by the USA, so feel safe. A mix of jet and prop are used, both were pretty prompt and a smooth ride.Lonely Planet suggests that it is cheaper to book with the airline direct, however, I found it up to 60% cheaper and much easier to book through www.opodo.com.You can't book domestic flights on the EA website, so e-mail them and compare prices with Opodo before booking.

1. there is some ways to travel around you could travel by bus, bike, privite taxis, taxis and e.t.c.you could also travel around by renting a car.when you rent a van you must get someone drive it for you but i wouldn't rent a vechical unless you are staying in Addis for while.2. watch out for taxi driver who takes advantage of you.(charging you more).

Bus

by thelittlevoice

Bus is a cheap way to get around in Ethiopia but it can also be tough. I took a bus from Lalibela to Addis Ababa and it took two days. The bus was full of chicken and the fact that Ethiopians didn't wanna have the windows open, it was quite difficult to breathe. The leg room is also little. Do not sit in the middle or your legs will feel numb!

TUK TUK's

by DAO

TUK TUK's are motorcycles that have been modified for up to 6 people to ride on the back. Yes, that’s the driver and 6 people. I saw these all over Bahr Dar and they were cheaper and more fun to ride than a regular taxi. It’s a great way to enjoy the sunshine and putter along.

Minibus

by thelittlevoice

We took a minibus twice, once from Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar and another time from Addis Ababa to Harar. We paid 120 Birr for Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar, they picked us at 3.30am and arrived at 4pm. The ride from Addis Ababa to Harar costed 100 Birr, they picked us at 7pm and arrived at 5am, the road was very good that we slept the whole time. There're many good things about minibuses, they pick you up and drop you off where you want, they run faster than normal buses, people are generally fine with you opening the windows!

ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES

by DAO

FLY ETHIOPIAN! Ethiopian is probably the best African based airline. For long haul they have modern and comfortable planes. Their short haul flights use older small planes and you get a basic service. What makes them great is that they have an extensive destination network within Ethiopia and all across Africa. You can reserve a seat without a deposit at their offices in Addis Ababa and pay later. I found the ground and air staff to be friendly and helpful. They are usually right on schedule. You can also join their ‘Sheba Miles’ frequent flyer programme and check/buy International flights on-line. If you need help buying or reserving domestic flights, ring their Addis Ababa Branch on +251-11-665 6666. They all speak excellent English and are very helpful.http://www.ethiopianairlines.com/

Driving

by flynboxes

This should probably go in the warnings and danger tips box but I don't like giving people a reason not to go somewhere which is what those tips can do. Anyway this picture was one I decided to take on my way down to Lake Awasa from Addis. It was one of about 4 I saw on my way down. The driver lived.....No disrespect to our Italian friends but I think they taught the Ethiopians how to drive. One of the problems is that Ethiopians hate traffic and will pass in an oppostive lane with traffic bearing down on them or if the dirt shoulder is clear they will drive up that. Combine this with a lot of large trucks carrying outsize loads such as large Cat bucket loaders etc that hand of the sides of the trailers by a foot on each side and have no wide load signs or anything to warn other drivers that they are about to have the drivers side of their car smashed in.Bottom line be careful and when...

Flying

by flynboxes

Unless you have alot of time, you will need to fly to get around in Ethiopia at some point.Ethiopian is the flag/sole carrier within Ethiopia for the most part. I did see a Cessna Caravan at Bole Airport but forgot what it was used for or where it went. Ethiopian is a well established carrier with a good safety record so no worries here. The fly Folker 50s around the interior. If you fly Ethiopian internationally from say the US, Europe or one of their Asian destinations you will get a discount on internal domestic flights. If not expect to pay $100-150 per leg to get around. Locals pay around $20-40 for the same flights. I booked/bought a bunch of tickets one day prior to flying without any problems but then my friend Solomon decided he wanted to go with me to Dire Dawa later in the week and was told the flight was full the day prior......the flight ended up with an open seat or two on...

Take a bus Gonder-Aksum

by mike_gda

The road from Gonder to Aksum is the most scenic one in Ethiopia. If you plan to go this way don't fly - take a bus!! The most interesting part is between Debark and Adi Arkay, when the road goes down the enscarpment of the Simien Mountains. If you plan to hike in the Simien Mountains, please know that there is no chance to hop on the Gonder-Aksum bus in Debark. The best solution is to pay someone to go back to Gonder and take a seat for you on the bus. I paid 200 birr for this (including bus ticket).
