Menus & Misunderstandings
  • Tip Rating:
  • In restaurants the menus are often in Amharic on one side and in English on the back side. Check the prices because sometimes they vary. Always ask about the price to avoid misunderstandings. Sometimes when the waiters are not too used to speak English they mix up numbers or they only have a guess because they don`t understand what you are on about!

    Kids
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ethiopian kids can be cute and lovely like kids can be everywhere on the world but they can go on your nerves after a while! Often it will happen to you that 20 or more kids will follow you pointing at you and yelling you, you, you or Faranji all the time. They may follow you for a long time, and I mean a long time, and sometimes show their excitement by throwing small stones at you. The best response is to point at yourself asking Who? Me? or shouting back Habesha (Ethiopian). They also approach at you saying Hello! Money!. Ask the kid Lemin (why) or tell them that they should give money to you. Wait and see the interesting reactions!

Where I come from parents tell their kids not to accept presents of foreigners or go with them! In Ethiopia it seems to be the other way round, like parents telling their children: Go, find a Fanranji and follow him!

These kids can be good fun but to be honest I was happy to escape from all this after four weeks. It stops immediately when you cross any of the borders to the neighbour countries.

  • Tip Rating:

  • Tip Rating:
  • In Ethiopia there is a lot of poverty. There are beggars everywhere. It is very difficult to ignore must to avoid being swamped by people. I was once walking in a place called Dessie, I had between 40 and 50 people trailing after me whereever I went. Generally, Ethiopia is a safe place, locals are often very curious, but harmless. In rural areas men carry semi-automatics to protect their land and families only. There have been cases of bandits, especially in the Simien mountains. When you go there you need an armed scout.

  • Tip Rating:
  • 1. Drink bottled water, cause your stomach is not used to this enviroment.
    2. Do not eat raw vegetables or fruit, for the above reason.
    3. Check with your doctor if you need to get any vaccination before leaving to Ethiopia.
    4. Watch your back packs and purses while in open air markets or any flea market.
    5. You always need to have a visa to enter the country.
Don' t get dissapointed from the above...you won' t regret visiting Ethiopia, and things are not that bad as they seem!

  • Tip Rating:
  • Do not photo with out permission!!! In places like Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia it can cause troubles with the locals. Usually they will also ask for some money.

    ROAD SAFETY

Driving yourself is a bit unknown in Ethiopia. Most places that actually rent cars will only let you drive in Addis Ababa and on sealed roads. That leaves out a lot of the good bits of the country. Driving is no worse than many places in Africa, but this is a lot higher. That means instead of being run off the road, you may be run off the side of a steep cliff that will certainly leave loved one looking at your will. If you do drive – drive defensively. Very defensively!

Just remember that Road Safety is optional.

    BAD WIRING IN HOTELS
For some reason everyone seems to think they are an electrician. I can honestly say I never saw anyone resembling a competent electrician in all my travels here. I have, however, seen people just try and just wire up any old thing. This included my landlord in Addis Ababa. Number of hot showers I got while living there – zero! I highly suggest that you make sure EVERYTHING is switched off when sleeping and you know where the fire exit is. Too many times I have had burning smells in my room.

    Exchanging Money in Ethiopia
As a reminder to those of you planning a trip to Ethiopia, make sure you exchange your currency in Addis Ababa! If you are traveling to Lallibela or south of Addis, there aren't any banks to exchange money. In Addis Ababa, cash as much money that you will need with most of it in very small bills (birr). The tribal people expect to be tipped for taking their photos, therefore small notes will come in handy.

If you are going to Lallibela, make sure you get rid of all of the birr that came from Lallibela before leaving that town. The money is so dirty you can smell it in someone's pocket across the room! You wouldn't even want to handle it without gloves on. People outside Lallibella won't want it either.
