National day in Cocobeach
  • Tip Rating:
  • I had to stay in the area of Cocobeach, which as it name tells is located on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean, north of the country, close to the Border otf Equatorial Guinea It happened to be the 12th of March, National day of Gabon, and, as an "important person" the local prefect invited me to attend the parade. Interesting was that it was no military, but working people from governmantal institutions (teachers, road workers, government employees. . ) who marched. Forbidden to laugh! In the evening I was invited to a party and was even asked to dance (sorry, no pictures). This sort of event is very important in African countries since the independence and the leaders believe it helps for national unity, as most African countries are sorts of ethnical puzzles left by the colonialists and traditionally, people have their leaders in the village and not in an anonymous somewhere in the capital city

    Tough guys
  • Tip Rating:
  • Usually you do not go alone in the forest, and it is not at all recommended. You even need to build a team, where each guy has his role to play and here on this picture is the "close gard" of my colleague Ovono. These important people are the "prospector", the foreman, the leader of the porters (who are not on this picture),the cook, the hunter, Ovono's personnal helper (back-pack carrier), and the seventh, I do not remember. Looks like a luxury tour, but it is very important to have people who are used to this environment and who feel as a team; these guys will spend few weeks together in harsh environment and it is better to understand well each other. On the other picture are colleagues Ovono and Ikhoghu, who were my firts "teachers" in rain forest knowledge.

    Gabonese are very religious....
  • Tip Rating:
  • Gabonese are very religious. Most people are catholics. I heard that sorcery and magic are commonly pratice too. I heard a lot of poisoning animal sacrifice stories. Wedding is still very important for them. Gabonese have a traditional way to see women. Women must stay at home, cook meals, be well-dressed (skirt and dress), raised their family and... don't talk loader than her husband :-( Most men have more than one women. Polygamy is tolerate and praticed a lot.
