San Lorenzo: italian in Port Gentil

by mtemperley

good restaurant and owner switches on wireless internet in the evening. it's not a superfast connection but you can at least check your email on your wi-fi enaqbled phone capitaine fish in curry sauce, spahetti with lobster

Ou Canal ( pronounced Oh canale ): Eat local - Port Gentil

by tarponjohn2002

Best value for money and great fish , you choose the fish and they cook it. Its dirt cheap and served with smile. I suggest brochettes de capitaine ( fish brochettes) fried bananas, rice and chili sauce....with a cold Regab beer...should all be less than CFA 6000...much less. To get there take a taxi...it's in the old village part of town...

In the forest: Wild honey

by kokoryko

Another food "tip": smoke the wild bee hives to get the honey; this works requires some skills in order not to be attacked by the bee swarm; smoking the hive makes the bees sleep or at least they are not agressive. You then can gather the honeycombs and let the honey flow into a calabash or other container; you also can eat the honeycomb like a piece of bread, yammmmm.

Rain forest: Crocodile is good.

by kokoryko

In the small rivers of Gabon, you sometimes come across crocodiles; these are small ones and generally try to escape, they know they are food, not like in East Africa where the Nile crocodile is waiting for you for his dinner.Well, crocodile in the rain forest is best prepared as a stew, it tastes like something between chicken and fish.In town some restaurants served grilled crocodile dishes, it is not as tasty . Crocodile stew, eat with your fingers, drink water, and listen to the insects in the trees at night.

the forest: Eat what you catch

by kokoryko

People from Gabon, mainly those living near the forest or having ancestors in the forest are still hunters, and they enjoy eating game. No restaurants just tell about some "special" meals. It may sound weird, but after few days of canned food you are ready to eat everything. The Pangolin (Manis tetradactyla or Manis gigantea) is an ant eater and this gives a special taste to its meat. This animal has big scales protecting it and it is difficult to prepare. The scales are burn and can easily be picked off, then, prepare it as a stew, with some spices ; rice is a good sidedish. Pangolin stew, with palm oil and manioc.

by Ed_vd_Velden

The is only one chinees restaurant is Port Gentill that is very good. It is expensive but the food is good, if you like chinees that is. There are a lot of little restaurants, held by local famillies. You can eat snake and other anymals.
