Another way to get to Elmina and back, is by Tro-Tro. It's just as cheap and fast, and most of all, it is very Ghanaian. A Tro-Tro is a small mini-bus that works just like a shared taxi: it only departs when it is completely full. In this bus, at least 18 people are packed in, until it is very, very full. It is not comfortable, but a small trip like Elmina-Cape Coast is no problem at all.
The price for a trip by Tro-Tro also is 2.800 cedis, about $ 0,28. They depart in Cape Coast from the Tro-Tro station in the east of the city. In Elmina you can ask for the station there, but when I was there, they just came by with the door open, shouting "Cape, Cape, Cape" and they were happy we wanted to join them.

A fast and cheap way to get to Elmina when coming from Cape Coast is by taking a shared taxi. At Chapel Square, in the centre of the city, these taxi's depart.
When you get there, the drivers will try to offer you a "drop taxi" first, that is 10 times more expensive. Make clear that you are only coming there for a shared taxi. This shared taxi only departs when it is full with 4 passengers, who pay 2.800 cedis ($ 0,28) for a single way each. It can happen however, that you'll have to wait long before the taxi is full. In that case you can decide to pay for the empty places. It costs you a few cents more, but at least you'll depart immediately.
The taxi takes you all the way to Elmina (about 15 minutes) and can drop you off directly opposite the Elmina Castle.
