Trade Fairground is a huge complex with stores, shopping hangars, curiosa stalls, chop bars, restaurants and so on.
You can find here almost everything.
You’ll have to pay a small entrance fee and once you’re inside, everything is a little more expensive than on the streets.

Ma Gina’s shop was certainly impressive. In what was essentially a small convenience store, we were incredibly impressed to find, not only five different types of Bacardi (Gold, White, Black, Reserva and Lemon), and three different types of cider (Hunter’s Gold, Savanah and a Canadian variety), but also caned meat, hot dogs, various fruit juices, toiletries, other food stuffs, snacks, flour, milk, alcohol, superglue and some other stationery.

At the Centre of National Culture also known as Arts Centre in Accra you can find hundreds of stalls and small shops, which sell all kind of artisan goods from all over the Ghana. You can find wooden carvings, masks, beads, brass work, leather work, cloth, drums, but also African music and paintings, made by local artists.

Louis Zeboah Kofi, a rasta-boy I met at Akuma Village invited me in his Powerful Drums (work)shop. He and his friends showed me all kind of drums and other music instruments, especially by playing them.

When you are looking for anything in the streets of Accra, you normally don't have to walk more then a kilometre to find it at the side of the road. In Accra you can find litterly everything at the roadside.

You can buy very nice and very cheap food at one of the chop bars at the side of the road, but also souvenirs, clothes, leatherworks, sunglasses, televisions, beauty-products and even furniture!

Most of the prices of the food- and drinkproducts are fixed, but about all the other prices you are expected to bargain.

  • If you are staying in Ghana for a longer period you will probably be craving for a little bit of Western food once in a while. At least I felt that need very strongly a few times. Then it is nice to know that at this supermarket in the Osu area in Accra, you can get lots of imported Western things.

At the Koala Shopping Centre you can find Western cookies, chocolates, candies, crisps, drinks, and all kinds of other things you cannot find at the Ghanaian markets. And I must say: that can be veeery nice sometimes.

The prices are absurd compared to Ghanaian standards: everything has the prices they also have in Europe, so that is 4 to 5 times more expensive then comparable products of local brands. But sometimes it is just worth the money...

    National Cultural Centre
    by Pieter11
The National Cultural Centre, right next to the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, is the biggest souvenir market in the whole of Ghana. At this big area you can find everything that can possibly be sold as a souvenir.

In this market you can get typically Ghanaian art like kente-cloth, beads and leatherworks, but also more general African stuff like masks, drums, djembe's, jewelry, paintings and woodcarvings. The quality is never a problem, the prices are always higher then somewhere else in the country though. Unless you are a really good bargainer of course.

And the worst thing about the Cultural Centre are the salesmen. Nowhere in Ghana I met more annoying people then at this little piece of land. Slick teenagers who call everybody their friends, litterly drag you to their shops, and all of them ask you the same useless questions. Just try to ignore those guys and just look at their goods, because there really is a lot of nice stuff to buy here.

When bargaining, especially here, you should NEVER pay more then half of the price they start with and it is even possible to only pay 25% of the original amount. So start very, very low when you are bargaining.

If you want to do some souvenir shopping and you don't have enough time to visit the National Cultural Centre in Accra, or you don't feel like being "attacked" by dozens of annoying young salesmen there, the mainstreet going through the area called Osu, Cantonments Road is a good alternative.

At the side of this street you can buy lots of different souvenirs all day long. They sell woodcarvings, masks, paintings, footballshirts and all kinds of jewelry here. You can get extremely much of of the price, because the tourists that come here, don't come here just to buy things like at the Cultural Centre. If you walk away because you don't agree on the price, they will just follow you to discuss a better deal.

Never more then 50% of the original price, but even much less is well possible.
