Local History

If visiting Ghana one has to go to tour the castles/slave fortresses. These are located in Cape Coast. Cape Coast is three hours West of Accra (depending on the traffic). Getting there is easy, just ride one of the vans going back and forth for GHC 9 (about $5 US). This was the only air conditioned ride I had during my whole visit. The visit was the highlight of my trip and I admit, it was kind of emotional for me, being a afro-american. Chances were pretty good my ancestor that left Africa probably came via one of the fifty castles in Ghana. The two main ones left are El Mina and Cape Coast Castles. Seeing the dungeons and hearing the tales of how the captives and future slaves were shipped to the America's was quite compelling.

Instead of (or as well as) planning all those trips up to so-and-so to do such-and-such, think:You're in a new, exciting, undiscovered (i.e. there are no holiday brochures about Ghana) country. Do something new and exciting that other tourists haven't done.Visit a village on the outskirts of a city, eg Nima, Kasoa, Mamobi (just outside Accra), Akropong, Madina (Eastern Region). Support local trades and make local friends (but don't accept a tour or guide, as it will inevitably cost you!) If you are travelling with friends as I was, you will really benefit from seeing the workings of the country and i guarantee you will come away with more from your visit.Nima is a market town just north of Accra, especially popular in mid-October, when the Muslim fasting period of Eid finishes. Kasoa is a 40 minute tro journey from Accra, costing c6500 in old money. It is situated just across the...
