Friends are not always friends

by Whoopi

As you are a foreigner, everyone wants to be your friend.... but be critical! Some only hope to get some money out of you, som are just curious, some want to be seen with you.....and some truely offers you their honest friendship. You'll soon be able to tell which is which....but as I said - be critical, at least in the beginning-

Don't show off

by Whoopi

Ghana is a very safe place. If they rob you, which rarely happens, it is extreamely rare that they harm you in any way.... However, people are poor, so if not to avoid being robbed, at least don't show off yourself and your money too much in respect for those who don't have this type of wealth....

Religion

by Whoopi

Ghana have many different religions, mainly christians, muslims and traditionalists practice their rituals. Ghanians show eachother respect and don't fight religiously among themselves. Please show the same religious respect as they do, no matter what you think is right...

Family

by Whoopi

Nothing is more important to a Ghanian then his or hers family. When you visit the locals you'll be sat down in a chair and they'll give you their photoalbum. They want you to see the whole family so that you can get to know them better. It is also a good idea to bring some photos with you because they always want a picture of you or to see you, your family and your friends from back home....

Kente

by Alpha_Ghana

KENTEKente is a hand made cloth for special opportunities.Ghana is proud of this fabric and also that a large piece of Kente is exposed at the gate of the United Nations in New York. You have plenty colours and models. It is mostly made in the villages and is a tradition of the Ashantis. The village of Bonwire, close to Kumasi is the best place if you want to see the traditionnal production of Kente.

Example of harmony

by Alpha_Ghana

In Ghana, you will meet Christians and Musleems, as well as some few other religions. However Ghanaians will show you how to live in harmony. There are no problem of religion, in some villages or towns, you have plenty churches and mosks. People don't fight for God, in fact they don't need to fight on any subject.Take this as an example !!!

If you smoke, do not smoke in public as it is considered rude (like on the street). Overall, the people of Ghana are very polite to each other and tourists. Treat them politely and with respect as well. Many people (especially the women) are traders and pride themselves on being cottage-industry capitalists. There is a real 'traders mentality' throughout Ghana and it adds spice to even something as mundane as negotiating the fare for a taxi or buying some fruit.

Tourists are like a magnet to the Ghanaian traders. To the average Ghanaian all tourists are rich. Remember that when they mark you as a tourist their price will be double ot triple what they would normally ask a fellow Ghanaian for. If you have Ghanaian friends, do all your shopping with them and let them negotiate for you. If not, then see how good a 'trader' you can be, Not all things are negotiable, but certainly most things sold on the street or from makeshift 'stores' (kiosks) are.

The Ghanians are a very warm friendly race and really appreciate any gifts you give them. These range from all types of toiletries, tee shirts, shorts really anything at all.
